Sup /sci/, what do you use for writing maths? What would you recommend? How do I not spread the ink when I write? I want to be able to write like pic related without smudging my entire notebook with ink from a liquid ink pen.

I only know one person who writes their math in pen. The guy is pretentious as fuck, constantly misuses technical terminology/jargon (but throws it at people who have never heard those terms in order to sound smart), interrupts conversations to give incorrect but patronizing explanations (often missing the point of the conversation and only explaining the most basic concept) and later complains about how dumb people are that he had to explain a basic thing.

Every time I look at his work there's a bunch of shit scratched out from things he fucked up but couldn't erase because he writes in fucking pen. The guy used to write in fancy looking leather bound books but now just carries around a stack of printer paper.

Don't be a pretentious douchebag, write in pencil.

I was taught in school to never use a pencil for anything, so I just got used to writing with a pen. We wrote tests with pens, in notebooks with pens etc. It's got nothing to do with being a pretentious douchebag in my case, it's just that I'm too used to writing with a pen that I rather scratch out the mistakes I made than erase them.

Basically, you have to find a good ink/paper combination to avoid crappy dry times and feathering. i use a lot of rhodia and clairefontaine paper.
A benefit of using a fountain pen is that you can choose a particular ink with the properties that you want, like a quick dry or bulletproof. Unless you're a lefty, then you're right fuckered.

Fountain pens are not a smart choice. Wrong. A pen makes you used to seeing your work look like blotchy shit.

A better argument is that one should learn some basic topography, typesetting, lettering, and general graphic design. That shit will make you hate work that isn't beautifully formatted, arguments whose logical structure isn't represented in their form, imperfections of any kind. In short it will make you so pedantic about your writing that you will want to be really sure that your argument is airtight and expressed in the best way possible because you don't want to waste effort redesigning the page layout afterward.

The best thing about this approach is that it translates directly to LaTeX typesetting which as this anon >>8250799 points out is the standard way of submitting beautiful documents.

>>8250802
Honest answer: it will take some time before your level of comfort and understanding really reach the point where you establish your own workflow. Fucking up somewhere in the middle of a long document and then trying to find out where while recompiling is what slows me down, along with consulting documentation of some packages I don't use too often, like subcaption. Though I can imagine my master's is going to be the last time in my life when I'll write walls of text with autistically long formulas to fill up space; all that was less of a trouble for me when writing papers. Anyway I still think it's easier to get stuff right on paper first.

>> No.8251141

>>8251072
I used to have that problem in my first couple years of LaTeX writing. Once I took the time to sat down to actually read and understand how the language worked I for the most part stopped having compilation problems. I think once you understand how LaTeX gets parsed (i.e. how it treats whitespace) and how it gets processed (i.e. that it is a macro language) you get a feel for how to write it in the correct "grammar". To put it another way, if you have a feel for LaTeX then making a fuckup is about as rare as accidentally forgetting to put a space between two sentences, typically the only time that sort of thing happens is when you've gone back and carelessly edited parts of the text afterwards.

It might also help to switch editors. I write all of my LaTeX in SublimeText. I'll often write out several pages of content (both math and text) before saving and compiling to see how it looks.

As far as consulting documentation for different packages, I don't have much advice I can offer on that front. Allegedly SublimeText and other text editors have the capability to give you an autocomplete/intellisense feature for any macros contained in all LaTeX package you use in your document (as well as any macros you define in your preamble). Unfortunately I have never been able to get the feature to work reliably on SublimeText so I can't really say much about how effective it is for that problem.

>I think once you understand how LaTeX gets parsed (i.e. how it treats whitespace) and how it gets processed (i.e. that it is a macro language) you get a feel for how to write it in the correct "grammar".
I guess this is the source of my problems, I'm used to programming languages where white space matters much less, or matters in a different way (like syntactically significant indentation), and macros aren't the main method of abstraction.

>I write all of my LaTeX in SublimeText.
I'm too poor for Sublime (living in a country whose currency has an awful exchange rate for dollars, and I have more important things to spend money on than a text editor) and I feel uneasy about using a trial when I know I won't buy it, but Atom is okay I think. I'll have to check if there are any plugins for documentation though.

I believe many people who have difficulty with LaTeX have this problem as well (I know I did).

FUCK PAYING FOR SUBLIMETEXT!
The guy is charging an insane amount for it just because he owns the market. You can use the trial for free for as long as you want but there is also a large community of people who crack it shortly after each release. You can often find information on gist or github pages. There's also this blog I ran into some time ago.
https://sublimecrack.wordpress.com/

Atom is pretty good too but depending on the packages you use you may be stuck using SublimeText or vice versa. I have used Atom for LaTeX (with some package, don't remember the name) and it actually seemed fairly reasonable but I've grown too accustomed to the package I use on SublimeText (little things that I'm used to and do without thinking).

That said, use whichever software you feel comfortable with. I was only recommending trying something like SublimeText since the workflow may make it easier for you to focus on what you're writing.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

I can understand this. It does take some getting used to but you'll thank yourself later when the practice has taught you to write correctly in LaTeX and not be pulling your hair out when writing your thesis or dissertation.
Basically, >>8251168 .

I personally use Texmaker but others exists. I like that I am able to compile the stuff I have written with a simple hotkey and see if I made a mistake somewhere.

>>8255687
It's fast with practice. Terrible for thinking in is another matter though. I personally find it better for me to internalize what I type than when I take notes on paper. That and the added longevity of an electronic and editable copy of your notes is always a good thing

You may be right for taking notes. I use vim for doing actual work though, because I don't like writing in a notebook if possible, too hard to navigate and revise.

It's an xps 15, and yeah I like it a lot actually, and I'm coming off a macbook pro. Always been a pc person, but nobody knows how to build a fucking laptop that doesn't disintegrate except apple. I went for the 1080 model over the 4k for battery life, no ragrets. Everything worked well out of the box, and I dropped in more ram and an NVMe m.2 ssd with no trouble. Only had it a few months though, so jury is still out on survivability.
