living in an ex-communist third world country has it's effects on moral values. people in general don't see a bright future when you're surrounded with shitty politics and economy. women from the previous generation of STEM degrees migrated or are jobless (not because they suck, but due to the political situations or lack of funding towards STEM). so they educated the younger women that an easy way out is through modeling, acting, porn or tennis (definitely not engineering). if you've ever been to eastern europe, you've seen how the women look and looks are very important here.

as a woman in STEM, I got a lot of judgement from other women (nonSTEM) saying that I'm pretentious for wanting to be an EE and for thinking I'm better then them. I honestly don't care what you do and I don't think I'm any better, but a lot of times people want to shame me for not picking a more effeminate major (such as art, linguistics, education). if it's a woman in STEM, they try to compete with looks and grades and they aren't very supportive of eachother.

Yes. Research is barely funded at all. PhD student stipend is ~$50/month, professors get $700-1000/month. Almost anyone good enough to get a job in the US or Europe will leave Russia, and they've been doing it for the last 25 years. Undergraduate STEM education in our top 5-10 universities is still decent though.

My friend got a master degree in chemistry recently.

His bachelors degree GPA is ~2.8 due to lots of C's and a D and many withdrawals. He had to take the entry level PE THREE times to pass. To say the boy is lazy is an understatement.

He did decently with his masters research and dissertation I suppose. He recently applied to one job as a chemical analyst but hasn't heard back.

He is of the mind that he will get a job quickly and has started putting all his eggs in one basket so to speak with getting a new apartment and new pets and such.

Will he have trouble? Im trying to help him as much as possible.

I mostly see value transfers, not value creation. Given the huge percentages of failed start-up, I am beginning to suspect that the need for new small business is not to create jobs as the job life is averaged less then 5 years and pays ~$30,00 a year, but that it is a secondary money pump as huge amounts of loans are pumped to start-ups then forgotten in bankruptcy acting as a largely unregulated quantitative easing program that is massive, yet so atomized that it doesn't look like anything interesting. Such an operation seems unstable from every manner I look at it, as the few success stories don't even start to offset the value loss. It makes digging and filling holes look good, at least then you have data point to see how wrong things are.
