I went to this university because I'm an aspie with a GED. If I had a higher SAT score and bothered to finish high school, I would have gone to somewhere much more "prestigious" AKA where rich kids act degenerative. I went to a very prestigious boarding school for secondary school, so I know exactly the differences between average public schools and selective private schools. There are no academic reasons to attend a selective school if you're autistic and have few friends by choice.

A big research university in the UC system

Inorganic Chemistry/Materials Chemistry

dont have one yet

i literally am in lab all day. its like a language. you start to pick up on it when its how you communicate all the time

yeah. We study and do really cool shit, but the jobs are not as common as they used to be. so thats really demotivational sometimes.

another university? i dont know. I feel like going to grad school for any higher rank and I would feel out of my league. This is a really good place for me, also has really cool research and a short graduation time relative to other universities of this same caliber. As for another major, probably. I really love chemistry and cant imagine doing much else, but I feel like I really missed out on engineering sometimes. I was pretty bad at math in high school and went to a small private uni with no engineering program. By the time I realized im not dumb, and it was just shitty high school taught math, I was too far into my major/wasnt able to transfer into an engineering program. PhD is the next best thing for my field. They say its pretty common for chemistry majors to go from chemistry to chemical engineering grad school, but the reality is you dont get the ABET accreditation and most will reject you. I knew a chemistry major I met at a PhD visitation weekend who applied to 20+ schools (for those of you who dont know, that's roughly $3000 in application fees, maybe more) and got rejected from all of them. But i'm having a lot of fun despite the cons to my situation and I'm taking engineering classes for fun anyway because I like math and they are free now that im a PhD student. if I had to switch, maybe materials engineering? i dont know but it would probably be something in the materials science/ChemE realm.

I don't know if that's a fair assessment since anyone graduating with a degree in film at UCLA is set for life. They can work in television or make commercials for good money if they can't find a dream job in Hollywood, also video games if they really want. UCLA is a world renowned film school the hard part is getting in.

While geology is a major you simply need to declare and BYU is a decent school. There is also a great need for geologists, especially as the world's resources are consumed and so few people are going into geology programs to fill the need.

So yeah, I will find work, not a guaranteed job like a film student from UCLA but I have great chances.

Mathematics is a weird subject because honestly if you already understand a theorem then you gain nothing by re-reading it again or applying it again in a different problem. You either know the theorems or you don't. You either can prove a theorem or you can't, Studying in mathematics is always just reviewing. You review theorems for your applied classes where you are expected to apply the theorems and you review definitions for your pure classes where you are expected to prove the theorems.

Every time I have to study I just re-read theorems and definitions from my notebook that I know are relevant for the test. I have never had to study in the sense that I would study chemistry back in highschool where I would read entire chapters and try to do as many practice problems as I could.

I do practice for my tests but I only do proofs, not exercise in the common sense. My philosophy is that if I can prove the theorem I can apply it and this has worked every time for now. Tests are always a mix of proving and solving just so you know.

That said, I am still in my freshman year so I suppose you are right when you say that I haven't encountered difficult subjects.

Well, I had all the Math and GE done. In other words, I had the 60 credit requirement and the golden four completed.

https://www.cpp.edu/~admissions/advising/impacted-majors.shtml?nav=undergrad

Essentially fulfill the impacted majors requirement and have at atleast a 3.5 GPA should have a high chance of getting in. Getting into this school shouldn't be too hard to get in compared to to CP SLO, UCLA, etc.

I know what you mean. It's a good philosophy to understand things and then go from there to specifics. But things are going to get harder and harder to understand. Proofs of difficult theorems often won't be very illuminating by themselves, and you're going to have to do a bunch of exercises (read: related proofs that clarify and complement the techniques used) to really start understanding the material.

In any case, make sure to work hard and don't ride on your talent. If you're very comfortable, push yourself. You can do much more than what's asked of you, and you should.

University of Central Oklahoma

Mechanical Engineering

3.2

My habits have changed over-time. In the beginning I didn't have an effective method and made only decent grades. Towards the middle of my curriculum I became became methodical with note taking and diligently doing my homework, and ended up making dean's honor roll for three-semesters. Now towards the end, I kinda don't give a shit and just take notes but don't read them later.

Yes, I just really like tinkering, also I have the potential to get my master's in something like aerospace engineering.

I would like to be at a different university as our entire engineering department shares the same building with biology, physics, and chemistry. We don't have a machine shop capable of manufacturing any complicated parts. Meanwhile in the flagship university of my state, the engineering department is the size of my college's entire campus. On the plus size, there are plenty of people getting jobs at Boeing and other fortune 500 companies with a degree at my university, and because tuition is so low, I have no dept.

Rarely. When I do, it's mainly just identifying what I can't outwardly explain well enough and reinforcing that. Sometimes I'll compile a list of topics that were covered so far and I'll review those using the aforementioned technique.

>Do you enjoy your major? Why?
It's alright. It's only been my first year, so I haven't taken anything like Circuit Design and Analysis. The head prof is a dick when it comes to grading. He's somewhat vindictive and looks for minutia in your work to deduct points for, even though he presents the same (if not worse) quality work in lecture.

>If you had the opportunity to choose another university and/or major, what would you do? Why?
I applied to MIT, but my grades were shit and I spent too much time trying to understand people with other interests. I didn't really have anything else on the side. My scores were pretty good though, but not MIT-tier.

If I had to pick a uni to attend, probably GT. I wouldn't have gotten accepted out of HS, considering my acceptance record to other FL unis. But, I think I would be able to transfer '17 Fall.

Overall, FL Poly is pretty nice. They're currently paying for everything, so money hasn't been too tight and I'll graduate without student loans. The only thing I'm worried about it quality of instruction and curriculum. I don't think we're covering the same depth as other unis. My friend at UF and I were taking the same state-designated class, but his class's midterm covered all the material on our final and more. I really hope everything turns out alright.

For example, what you wrote could be construed as all those schools being bullshit and the ones with the asterisks are ones that are much more likely to be bullshit. Your post would have been stronger if you had just included the elite schools with a post that directly states that you believe those post where bullshit. A simple "These schools are bullshit. Post proof or you're lying". That way the onus would be on those posters to provide proof. In the end, you made your post confusing. Especially in an online environment which needs precise words to translate your meaning to others.

The geology part is cool, engineering math was somewhat hard, hoping differentional and complex are a bit easier

Nope, University of houston has the best geology/geophysics program in the state of texas, we are ranked #1 in that, #2 goes to A&M and college station and 3rd place goes to UT and austin, I have a shitload of internships from different oil companies because UH is smack dab in the middle of everything oil, i didn't like mechanical engineering because i found it really boring.

No, that does not imply that you were singling those out as being fake and the ones without asterisks were actually real. All that sentence implies is that those schools are elite schools. The sentence you wrote does not imply anything when it comes to the schools that you did not put asterisks.

Kinda funny, I used to go on /sci/ regularly from junior year of high school up until my junior year of college. After high school I went to a no-name, local, easy (read: shit-tier) university, but then for my junior year I transferred to Michigan. With all the opportunities (research, professors, classmates, activities, etc.) I've been so distracted I haven't even had time to go on /sci/. This is my first time popping in randomly in maybe 6 months or so (when I randomly popped in last time). I'm just procrastinating on a thing for my summer internship.

Most of /sci/ is garbage. I don't even remember it being this bad when I went on regularly, but holy shit.

If we assume the people in top schools aren't just blatantly lying: you have a lot better to be doing than being a regular on here. If you can't see this, then you deserve to be made fun of/questioned. People who don't have access to resources at a good university or aren't as successful (as I used to be) can't really see how bad it is here. At my high school and previous university, there was such a dearth of people interested in science and math that this was the only place I really knew where I could go to discuss these topics. I also used to think this place was really good for that reason. Now, I'm looking through the catalog and something like 90% of the threads make me cringe.

>If you had the opportunity to choose another university and/or major, what would you do? Why?
Another university: yes. Oh my god, yes. I don't want to feel entitled or anything, but I really wish I got into a better school. I had 99th percentile scores on the ACT, SAT, was a National AP Scholar, and a huge amount of district/regional awards. But because I was such a fuckup freshman and sophomore year of high school, my school rank was 47%. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to attend an already cheap university with a scholarship, but I feel awful and emotionally drained whenever I go back to that school. I'm dreading this summer being over, even though I've done basically nothing during it (got rejected from the one REU I applied for. That was for the best anyway, I needed to brush up on my programming skills anyway).

I wanted to transfer to a better school after freshman year, but that's when a big bout of depression really hit, and I convinced myself there was no point in applying anyway. Not even sure if it's worth applying anywhere after my sophomore year, it seems way too late to get anything meaningful done in terms of research and social groups.

Another major: Nah son, Machine Learning and Predicative Modeling are cool as fuck. I love this field a ton.

I definitely do as a means of differentiating myself from Premed students despite learning virtually the same information. In my own opinion, it seems more interesting talking about how I operated on a jaguar last week as opposed to "I fondled a child's testicles for his physical." Of course, this example only applies to Pediatricians and other varieties of doctors will be more interesting, but I hope I've illustrated my point.
>If you had the opportunity to choose another university and/or major, what would you do? Why?
I probably wouldn't change my major since my end-goal is seeking employment in a zoological attraction as a veterinarian, however, I should have stretched further instead of only applying to UD and two other schools as I was certain I would be accepted at Delaware. While the Pre-Vet program is well-regarded by veterinary schools globally, Penn State and Cornell are ranked higher and I would have stood a chance for acceptance into either. Furthermore, both Penn State and Cornell have veterinary graduate programs within their institution which would have made applications at the end of my undergraduate a hell of a lot easier.

Nvm I'm not. I'm the cognitive science major from UTD

Fellow UTDfag here, what exactly don't you like about the school?
Is it just not good for your major?

In any case, to be entirely honest, I don't get out to "enjoy" the campus all that much to be honest. I'm more focused on just staying cooped up in the dorm or library and focusing on my classes (after the shitshow that was my first freshman semester).
I used to play Magic with some nerds down in the union, but I've kind of given up on that.

I'm still looking to do things on campus (besides the actuarial fraternity), but nothing SUABB or the other orgs put on really interests me, unfortunately.

Make yer own. That's really easy to do at a smaller/lesser-known school, and "founder of so-and-so at school" gives you good points on a resume.

I was halfway considering making a wargaming club on campus, since I'm also a fa/tg/uy, but I'm still trying to ask around and see if there's a big enough interest for it.

I'm from Russia, so...

> What university do you attend?
Kuban State University

>What is your major?
Fundamental Computer Science & Information Technology

>What is your GPA?
4.6

>How do you study?
I'm prioritizing university lessons. Maths and programming are more important than humanities. But, in addition, I just love learning and reading.

>Do you enjoy your major? Why?
Yes, I have a soul for computer science. In economy, in science, in engineering, everywhere need computer programming and applied mathematics. If you are programmer, you may be needed anywhere.

>If you had the opportunity to choose another university and/or major, what would you do? Why?
I hope to move to more advanced university. KubSU isn't my dream.

Honestly? I feel kind of lonely all the time. The few people I've met that seem really interesting and worth being friends with are transferring to UT for the rest of their academic career.

Past that, I can't get past the idea that I'm at an 'inferior' school. I understand that's shitty thinking and that UTD is honestly not a bad place, but when I see my old friends having the time of their life at UT, CMU, Berkeley, or MIT, I almost instinctively blame UTD. And since I haven't met a *single* person who says they enjoy it here, that reinforces my style of thought.

>>8213955
Good on you for focusing on academics. Do you not do anything for fun though?

forgot to reply to this; there would definitely be interest. Can't count the number of times I saw /tg/ kids playing some nerd (using this colloquially, those games are actually fun) games) at 2am in the West Res. Hall lobby.

While I can understand that kind of thinking, UTD is pretty up there for the "best" schools I could have gotten in to.
I fucked around a lot in high school, and I truly realized how hard it bit me in the ass during freshman year; I'm making the most of it, and living with my actions.

That being said, I don't mind that UTD is such a "boring" school.

>Do you not do anything for fun though?
Vidya with online friends for the most part, when I get the time. I'm also self-teaching myself to draw, as well as getting into lifting.
Not to mention all the /tg/ geekery.

>>8214281
Really? I wish I got put into West, I've been in SW and N so far, and all it's been was people watching sports or playing pool.

Then you're a far more mature person than I am. I hope I can adopt a similar mindset as I go through sophomore year.

Lifting, huh? Do you use activity center or the smaller dorm gym? Asking because I myself want to get back into lifting (I was very into it in high school, but haven't done anything for 1-2 years).

Yeah, West had a lot of geeky stuff going on past midnight. Very friendly people as well, they answered all my random questions about the games they played

>I hope I can adopt a similar mindset as I go through sophomore year.
I hope I can maintain it, to be honest with you.
Gramps is paying my way through university, and I really want to make him proud for his own sake, beyond just doing well for my own career.

>Lifting, huh? Do you use activity center or the smaller dorm gym?
Smaller gym next to west, I never felt very comfortable working out in front of those big windows; it's usually pretty empty around 3 to 5 in the afternoon, but really picks up at night.
This is actually the first time I've started lifting in earnest, but hey, strong mind and strong body makes a strong man.

>Yeah, West had a lot of geeky stuff going on past midnight. Very friendly people as well, they answered all my random questions about the games they played
I'll have to check it out then when my game ships; were they playing card games, or legit miniature war games?

I understand. You seem to be determined, so I'm sure you'll do him proud.

Empty is good lol, though I was a gym-rat in high school, I never got used to working out in a crowd of people. I'll check out the smaller gym sometime soon.

Both, though I saw the card games more often than the games that required miniatures.

Thanks man, it means a bunch to hear that.
And that's awesome to hear, on both accounts; hopefully I'll be able to find enough players to actually justify dropping so much money on miniatures, kek.

>What university do you attend?
University of Wisconsin River Falls

>What is your major?
Physics and Math

>What is your GPA?
3.75

>How do you study?
I usually just do practice problems and sometimes I'll watch a video if I'm having trouble understanding a concept or am lazy. The videos make me think I know what I'm doing, but then I can't really do it.

>Do you enjoy your major? Why?
I do enjoy it. Physics is fun because we get to dick around doing projects fairly often. It's interesting to see different ways of manipulating numbers, too.

>If you had the opportunity to choose another university and/or major, what would you do? Why?
I'll be going on the the University of Minnesota to get an engineering degree. I don't care about the prestige, and I wish River Falls had an engineering program so I didn't have have to pay as much.

What >>8213133 said. Also, it's pretty fun being at an in-state school with a ton of international students. It feels less like a grinder and more like a community, even more so if you choose to join a frat (not sure where you're from. If you're from the NW like me you probably have a whole bunch of ideas about frats you need to trash). Plus it makes the campus just feel super diverse. There are people from rural middle-of-nowhere Georgia and people from Greece and China and everywhere in between.

I think if you come in expecting everyone to be god-tier you're in for a disappointment. If you come in thinking about us as people from all sorts of backgrounds and walks of life and abilities you're in for some fun stuff.

People here STEM meme a bit too much for my tastes, but it's to be expected. Welcome to Tech dude, enjoy your stay.
