ive been wondering this for a long time. alright, let's say an object is moving at a specific momentum. now let's say that object all of a sudden splits into two pieces without any force acting upon the object to cause it to change its inital momentum before the complete split. now, what would happen. would the two halves increase in speed or would they both remain the same inital speed they were before the split?

(M+m)v = Mv + Mv

Think about it this way. You and a friend are rolling on skateboards side by side at the same speed while holding hands. You then let go of each other, would you speed up?

assuming both objects are equal weight then they'd be under the same circumstances, if air bouncing off either pieces wouldn't effect them then they may as well be a whole

In other words, if the object split, the halves (or pieces) would fall wrt the center of mas of the pieces which is along the original trajectory of the projectile. You learn this in Classical Mechanics.
