I refrained from making any comment at all. I just started eating my chicken faster so hopefully I could be out of there ASAP.

No, they're simply superstitious and uneducated. An average family, to say.
I am also the only somewhat scientifically and philosophically literate member of my family, too, and whenever I say that a belief they hold is either pseudoscientific or illogical I am simply told that "I argue too much".
Just be glad you're more educated than they are.
