What is the explanation for such a significant percentage of Nobel winners and great scientists being from a relative small religious upbringing (Judaism) ? Why do Jews have such a large representation in the sciences?

I think being forced to be merchants or salesman rather than farmers (always being run out of town so no agriculture for them) and having to face adversity over thousands of years instilled cultural and genetic (maybe?) needs for intelligence and hard work among them.

Anyone reasonably intelligent can do those things, but you need the proper education and mentorship. Not just a degree, but studying under and learning from an existing world expert. They have the connections to accomplish that.
