Why are so many people majoring in CS? Won't 80% just be code monkeys?

I don fully understand this meme.
I'm about to start uni, and computer engineering seemed neat but after talking with a lot of people they said it was actually very boring, and so is CS.

I might just say fuck it and go into math and physics

>> No.8108749

I'm studying CS and it seems most of my schoolmates are in CS because they like videogames or because they want to get into web development. It's kinda sad really.

CS grad student now, I wish I had majored in physics for my undergrad. Seems much easier to pick up CS concepts than the other way around.

Code monkeys make around 30-40k a year. That's better than average.

I hate to break it to you but most people who go to school are just looking to get jobs. Not everyone is going to be the next Elon Musk or Gates.

>I'm about to start uni, and computer engineering seemed neat but after talking with a lot of people they said it was actually very boring,
It's not for everyone. If you don't like it, you don't like it.
>and so is CS.
CE split from CS in the 70s. And they took all the interesting parts with them.
A CS degree is essentially a watered down math degree that also says you can code.

>I might just say fuck it and go into math and physics
If you don't like CE, then this is the correct decision.

>>8108749
I've had only the same experiences.
A lot of people obsessed with VR or AI who clearly never tried to read a book on either, too.

Not a cs student but I've gotten to know a few cs students in my uni and it seems like 90% of them barely even touched a computer before enrolling in cs, simply because they heard it was "the degree of the present and future"

I'm going for CS because I'm not interested in anything and want to die and was supposed to go to college.

Should I do CE?

What are the top-end jobs within computer engineering and CS?

>> No.8109338

>>8109332
xD well you can create compilers, make new concepts in CS, you can do many math problems, and find a solution for them
If you want to go to the indrustry my suggestion is that you learn UML and became softwere engineer not some dumb fuck who writtes code. You can contribute to many fields of life, medicine, physics, mathematics, i think in everything there is somekind of pattern so its computable ;)

At least CS gets some Mathematics in good universities.

Look at any tech company, do you see software engineers anywhere? No, not even in mid management or even low tier employee.

The real choice for people who want to work with computer related technologies is Computer engineering, be it signal processing, machine learning, processor design, FPGA, or simple code monkeying.

It has good marketability. All of my friends in Physics are coding for research purposes or interning somewhere where coding is necessary for the job. I see no issue with having any education in programming. I think it's fantastic for our society in general, that so many people are willing to invest their time in studying these things. However, I know that organizations / institutions have been pushing this idea that the CS industry is at a candidate deficit and needs more in the pool. While this may be true currently, with the growing trend of CS students... I worry that at some point the market will be incredibly saturated. Moreso than has ever been seen before in any other industry. Resulting in discouraged programmers, with great ability, not getting jobs. I can only hope that when this comes it will inspire new industries instead of stagnation.

Clarify then. So you're claiming that no aspect of CS curriculum in universities teaches programming... or that CS isn't just programming?

>> No.8109990

>>8109974
CS is way too broad to get saturated in the near future given the current context of technological progress. CS is not focused on teaching you to program, that's just a tool that you typically use to help you accomplish your goals. The market of software engineers/web developers is just a subset of the market of CS -- you can go into robotics, computer vision, machine learning, statistics, cyber-security, real-time systems, embedded systems, etc. The idea of discouraging others to go into CS because there are too many programmers is just silly

Sure, many will be just code monkeys, although statistics seems to be that many end up on good jobs. I personally like academia and research.
