/sci/ how do you feel about kids that cheat in your classes?

I had a test today in my differential equations class. Long ass test. But its curved. And some kid in front of me was on his phone the whole time googling answers. fucking up the entire curve.

Damn bro. That's pretty shitty of him.

I don't like people that cheat, but in a weird way I feel bad for them. They had to resort to fraudulence in order to pass.

As much as I may pity them, I also clearly see that they're hurting themselves as well as doing a disservice to others. I've been offered to cheat in a few classes and I've always refused. No point in building success on top of lies. I'd rather fail on my own than succeed by another. But I also didn't attempt to expose anyone. Mostly because it would probably boil down to word vs word and it would only result in a headache.

I'd like to say is that their cheating eventually catches up to them and they get fucked, but sometimes liars prosper.

>taking a serious university exam in maths/physics
>wasting time googling answers

from my experience cheating in situation like that is completely useless, because you won't be able
to even attempt to solve half the amount of tasks when you need to look up stuff inbetween.

I had an exam in theoretical physics once and I prepared by working through some of the old exams the lecturer made available for everyone.
The questions weren't that hard but very laborious. The final exam was very similiar to the material I had studied so I just raced through the questions reconstructing most solutions from memory. Even though I worked fast and didn't waste any time I only managed to solve 80% of the exam. Since my answers were all correct and the rest of the class did abysmally bad I got a very good grade.

I know math lecturers that design their exams so that at least 75% off people fail the first time. You have 2 hours to solve the kind of questions, which took the teaching assistant 5 hours to figure out the sample solution. Cheating is impossible in cases like that.

This is a common issue I've seen from hiring people from naval academies and ivy league schools (and why I tend to stay away from it): they appear to think that working in the real world is just like school and that as long as they work really hard they'll be rewarded. Nothing could be further from the truth. The real world rewards results (tongue twister), regardless of how hard someone worked to get there provided they didn't cause any harm.

Essentially, you're all pretending that honesty is worth jack shit in this world. Degrees are a formality and should be considered as such; whether you pass by cheating, by using money to pass or by actually studying for the subject makes absolutely no difference.

it's about learning, exactly, it's not about the exams, whether you've learned or not will show once you need to use what you're supposed to know, in the industry or the academy, I know people who have a better understanding of the material than I do, yet the consistently get a lower score, exams mean nothing,

>> No.7967947

>>7967909
Learning? Is that what you keep telling yourself?

Seems pretty naive to me. You can have an excellent amount of knowledge in any given subject, unless you live in a third-world country, you won't get the job without the degree as a form of 'proof' that you actually have the knowledge. Even if you are blessed with a photographic memory, allowing you to memorize everything almost perfectly, you can not become a lawyer by simply knowing the law by heart, probably even knowing it better than 90% of lawyers out there.

The degree is, as I said before, a pure formality. Furthermore, degrees can even vary depending on the university you studied at. A degree at Oxford is considered more valuable than a degree in some other non-prestige university (even if it's the same subject). We, the western civilization, have succesfully established an educational system that encourages students to bypass the original purpose of education by temporarily memorizing certain concepts, theories and facts in order to mindlessly reproduce them in a test for the sole purpose of being able to prove that at some point in their lives, those students exactly understood those random accumulations of facts.

Yes, keep pretending education and degrees are actually promoting the seek for knowledge and the development of intelligence. It's your choice to believe in fairytales.
