What's the importance of learning probability? I find it so fucking useless.

>> No.7701454

If you ever want to get your hands on raw scientific data you should know how to handle it, and a thorough understanding of probability is the basis of that.

Other than that countless applications in economics and such.

seems useful to me

That's only more proof that it's useless as the computation will give a probability < 1

Gee, I don't know.

You wanna win a goat or a car? Probability can make the difference.

It helps you keep an open mind. Otherwise you'd be using equal signs as an end all beat all to the search and its compendable findings.

Have a riot.

This. You can't do science without probability.

Other things you can't do without probability:
> statistical mechanics (which includes physical electronics/semiconductors)
> information/communications theory
> control theory
> electrical noise
> quantum mechanics
> signal processing

There are probably a boatload of other topics you can't study without at least a basic understanding of probability. It's one of those things that, after a point, rears its head almost everywhere (kinda like calculus).

Erdos proved the upper bounds and lower bounds of Ramsay's number using a probabilistic proof

im sure there are other proofs which do similar things as well

also there's the probabilistic method of finding primes, and it is undeniably VERY significant to our modern society.

Other than scientific applications? Winning bets against plebs who don't understand probability. Got 30+ people in a room? Bet someone that at least two people in the room have the same birthday
