Too crowded. I often get stuck in traffic while walking behind lines of people. But I live in Riverdale which is pretty suburban so it's not terrible. From the startup thing I'm guessing you live somewhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn so it's probably much busier there.

Athens is a little depressing if you're older since it's full of undergrads.

it doesn't matter what program you did it through

what matters is
(a) having some kind of research output, published or not, that you can submit with your application
(b) more importantly, having top-tier recommendations from GOOD faculty in your field saying you have research talent

by good I mean: faculty with a track record of placing students into good phd programs and those sames students doing well, faculty that are well known in their field, and faculty that went to top phd programs themselves

this is the most important thing in your application after meeting baseline gpa/gre cutoffs

ECE.

Some come here because it's right in the backyard of Chicago and their family and entire fucking high school graduating class goes here. Because that's where everyone else is going.

Some come here because they got rejected from everywhere else and had to settle for the next best thing.

But I have yet to meet a single person in my department who came here because U of I was their first choice.

The incoming class is literally composed out of rejected applicants to more recognizable schools who are somewhat capable, or in-staters who got in due to it being a public university whose mission is to serve them, which is really depressing.

To top it off, 0 name recognition.
