Hey

I am considering taking the IQ test to join Mensa.
I scored 124 on a 40 min test online, and thought I would just give it a shot.
As far as I know you have to score 130.
I know IQ doesn't mean anything, but I just want to see how it goes.

Has anyone taken the test? And has any advice?
I know IQ is something you can increase to some degree, and was hoping someone had some experience in this.

Otherwise anything related is welcome.
Pic related, it's the test I took.

mensa person here

sure take those tests join mensa and then go to the meetings

in my several years of attending in 2 different cities mostly lots of non-achiever types who's only claim to success is passing an iq-test

why is this ? because successful people or even people who have applied themselves in life don't have time to go to meetings about how smart they are because they are busy living their lives

that typed I did have some fun and meet some nice people back in Atlanta bigger city than here in seattle bunch of goofs but even the Atlanta group faded after a few years they got too mensa-onlyish

whatever

Not very much, it's like judging a car by a photo.

It may look good but if the engine is missing the car won't be moving.

Interesting. I haven't really read a whole lot on Mensa, could you describe these meetings for me?
And is there any benefit of being a member?

I kinda though that it was a clever idea to charge people a fee to take their test, and then give them a piece of paper to show off, if the managed to get 130 or above..

I think it said on my test, if you got over 120, you had pretty high chances on getting 130 on your official Mensa test.

>> No.7603778

>>7603747

True. However I don't agree that it isn't a accomplishment. It says that you have a greater IQ than a lot of people, regardless of what sort of "wisdom" it measures.
The fact is that IQ test can only be used to measure how good a person is a taking IQ tests, not as a measurement of wisdom.
So a person with a high IQ should not consider one self a wiser as a person with lower IQ, but he can say that he is better at taking IQ tests and solving those tasks. If it makes any sense..

I'm 130 on that test. I've never taken an official one in person so I have no idea how accurate it is. I would not go so far as to say that IQ does not mean anything, by a long shot. It's more accurate to say that high IQ alone does not guarantee life success, though it does help a great deal. The concept's reputation has taken a beating due to inconvenient associations with race and gender over the years.

In principle I understand the utility of high IQ societies, they're clubs that let people be around others with a certain minimum level of ability. If you happen not to work/live in a high IQ environment but want a particular kind of company, they could be useful.

I haven't taken that one multiple times, I have taken others floating about online, that was a couple of years ago though. I actually took this one a few months back after seeing a discussion of IQ.

I'm not sure if the others are still up, they were whatever the harder tests were for highiqsociety. I just looked and I see that they're now charging for the test! There used to be a bunch for free.

You probably can increase IQ scores somewhat with practice, but that isn't going to matter for the really hard questions, the ones that force you to track lots of variables at once. I also believe that IQ score is fairly consistent when retested. Mine has been around the 130 mark from the online stuff I've done, except for obviously shitty ones where I get 150+. I can tell you right now I don't have a 150 IQ.

I don't think this is true. It's just a common meme. I just think that IQ doesn't really matter in society unless it's in the more extreme ranges. Otherwise, society has enough buffers and redundancies, and values a wide enough gamut of skills to more or less level the playing field.
In other words, I think IQ does measure your intelligence, it's only that we've constructed a society in which intelligence is just not as determinant as we like to believe it is so a positive correlation is not as strongly seen in practice. This is, I think, more good than bad, but I guess it can be bad from a certain pov.

What always strikes me as odd is that there doesn't seem to be a clear consensus about what areas IQ tests should actually cover.

Like, I did an IQ test some years ago, which was considered to be mostly legitimate (although still online) and did score an average result. In addition to logic puzzles, which most tests seem to include in some way, there also were quite some puzzles related to language and math. I'm not used to doing calculations in my head, so I lost quite a significant amount of time to the latter.

On OP's test, in comparison, I scored 126, because it's puzzles are only related to logic, which is much more up my alley. This is a total difference of about 20 points. And a gap of 20 points is ridiculous, considering that IQ is supposed to be a quantifiable and unalterable factor.

Yes, they test these things because people with low IQs find them difficult. It's not that you are "smart" for being to able to do them, there's just a strong correlation with being able to solve them and not being stupid.

As a member of mensa from Czech republic, live in a +-400k city,
absolutely agree with this

I was very dissapointed with the anual meetings

On the other hand we can get VIP entrances to shit like power plants and other interesting stuff

guaranteed not one poster above average IQ in here...these comments are so idiotic, the basic ignorance and misunderstandings and pseudo science and etc.

Statistically that's quite unlikely.

You come in here talking about pseudo-science, while having no knowledge of standard distributions

ps. my iq range from 137-142. results of real tests, of different types, administered starting in grade school through my 20's. gifted and honors program since grade school.

and so what? i am a scholar/intellectual (i won't even read anything fiction and not academic, it bores me...i only read professional journals/essays and books from scholarly publishers), but that's hardly all i am. not listing all my academic achievements but they are everything you'd expect. mostly i skipped classes in high school/college because i could teach myself better. still got the highest of degrees and placements and awards and etc.

>> No.7610444

Guys, I know a girl with an IQ of 149 that didn't do well in high school and then you have those with 115 that did very well. If you don't apply yourself, you're not going to go anywhere.

>> No.7610445

>>7610440
that wouldn't be pseudo science you average, it would be simply epistemic limitation (ignorance) or fact denying.

like i said...

ps: 4chan is not a representative sample of the population. and even if it was, only about 10/100 have an iq over 110 (high average). there haven't been that many posts in here yet. learn2basic math kiddo.

That false,I'm in the 2% better IQ and succeded in the Mensa test

1) Nobody claimed that these online tests are representative of a proper IQ exam

2) Nobody even claimed that a high IQ is meaningful

I don't care what the average user's IQ is or how many are above 110 (you didn't specify on which scale/using what s.d. so that's meaningless anyway).
It is very unlikely that not a single person who posted in this thread has higher an IQ than 100.

If you would like to run the numbers on what the average IQ needs to be to get reasonable odds than not one of 64 posters is better than average, please do go ahead.

65

65 posters

>> No.7610504

>>7610445
I guess chucklefuck here never passed stats 101

Assuming the site is representative example (bear with me here):
The odds that not one in the 64 posters has an average or better IQ is 0.5^64 = 54.2 x 10^-21
That's 0.00000000000000000542%

So now let's go ahead and assume the average IQ here is 1 s.d. lower than the global population (~85).
That means on our shifted distribution, we're looking for the odds that not one single poster is 1 s.d. higher than our average.
Any given poster has a 16% chance of being 1 s.d. above the group average, so 84% chance they are not
0.84^64 = 14.3 x 10^-6

That's a whopping 0.00143% that nobody in this thread has a >100 IQ, even when we assume the average /sci/ poster is dumber than 84% of the population.

Something tells me you're not as successful as you make out, friendo.

Following from >>7610504

In case you are wondering, you'd need a local population in the lowest percentile (dumber than 99% of the global pop.) to get a 52% chance that nobody here has >100.

Come on, you can clearly see that 4chan isn't open in his browser, so it's likely that he's posting from a phone or a tablet. Maybe he likes to use an app or he had 4chan open on his phone cause he just came back from the shitter.
