How do I develop a passion for science? To the point where I enjoy studying more than playing video games?

turn off your video games.

Why do you want to develop a passion for it in the first place? If you don't have a passion for it then maybe you don't really want it. It's kinda like saying how do I make myself be attracted to this girl.

Because being able to immerse yourself into it and work on real world problems instead of made up ones sounds interesting.

You see this? There is your problem. You don't really want it. You treat it like some kind of toy that you think is interesting, will play with it for a few days, and discard it. Why do you really want it?

OP, if you had a passion for math, then you'd find it more fulfilling than video games.

In every era of history, brilliant minds seek meaningful problem solving and idiots seek inane entertainment.

The average scientist isn't a brilliant mind. Your average undergrad finds videogames more interesting than his field and is probably only pushing himself through it with money in mind.

I think it's more like a tool. A tool for realizing ideas. But acquiring that tool is no fun to me, while I see others enjoy it.

Is there no way besides being born with the right genes to feel an intrinsic motivation?

Age helps. When I was an undergrad, I was practically addicted to vidya but at 26, playing video games feels more like a chore than anything. I only really feel in the mood for games when I get sick and stay home.
