That pic shows a socket weld of what appears to be stainless steel. Not everyone can weld well. It is somewhat of an art. The reason is because many of the different alloys used in industry have a weld puddle which behaves very differently. The puddle is the molten bit of metal at the end of the electrode. For instance carbon steel has a weld puddle which is fairly consistent and easy to manipulate. And aluminum has a weld puddle which behaves almost like water.

I first saw this in Jane's USAF and it got me hooked ever since.

Does anyone know why the nozzle resizes like that? Is it consciously done (i.e automatically by the computers) or is the nozzle just responding to thrust variation? I'm thinking its for accommodating varying flow rates, but could someone walk me through the entire webm?

Here in Alberta (oil country) you can make $120,000 or more CAD if you can B-Pressure weld.

Keep in mind that B-pressure welding is considerably difficult and most companies want 95%+ of welds to pass x-ray inspections, which means that they have to be pretty damn perfect.

The variable nozzle is to maintain maximum thrust without engine surge. This is when too much pressure builds at the rear of the engine and the turbines may stall.

The engine I work on is the RB199 and the nozzle is air driven, computet controlled. Manually adjusted (potentiometers on the computer)

No. The test set you use when setting up the engine determines the ideal size. You then adjust the computer to do what the test set thinks is best.

Tornado is the aircraft I work. You're right the nozzle us not as priminent as other aircraft, but still has a large area range.

Not really. Figures obtained are adjusted for air temp and pressure. The setup involves the live engine on aircraft with the test set plugged into engine comp overriding it / working out best nozzle are (aj) for fuel flow. You then adjust the potentiometers of the computer to match the ideal voltages given by the test set.

Also it will give figures form max turbine temp (limiting factor of a gas turbine) which is another pot on the computer

Also initial fuel flow, acceleration and deceleration can be adjusted by altering physical stops on the main fuel pump

Cool shit man.

Last question. How difficult is it to fix a jet or just its engine during a test? These things can power several tons of aircraft to mach 2 and I see them fixed, not moving an inch at full afterburner. Same with rocket engines, like posted in this thread.

>>7512907
Very easy.
Ive never seen one on a test bed, but while its in the aircraft you can run both engines at max reheat with just the aircraft brakes holding it.
You dont even have to chock it (but of course you do).
It will hapily jump the chocks if the brakes are off.

I assume a bed is just bolted to the floor.

>aircraft brakes
The brakes act on the wheels? They look too flimsy to be able to withstand full thrust. At least that's what I've always said to myself.

>> No.7513168

>>7513160
The brakes are hydraulicaly pressed (270 bar) and are of a multi pad construction with the static disks sloted into the wheel. I dont know how much force you would need to move them.

The brake controll valve is attached to an abs type system, this alone tells you that the limiting stopping factor is tyre friction. Not brake friction.

Apparently tyre rubber on concrete can have a coefficient of friction over 0.65.
Considering the weight of the aircraft (usually around 24 tonnes) it is not suprising that the jet doesnt start sliding.

>> No.7513171

>>7513168
Also overcoming static friction can take up to twice the force of sliding friction

There's a lot to learn in almost all fields, but god damn aircraft are one of man's greatest inventions. I could spend an entire day looking at one, no problem.
