ITT you post the calculator(s) and writing utensil(s) that you currently use

>TI-36X Pro
>Pentel Sharp Automatic P209 0.9mm
>Pentel Twist-Erase III Automatic 0.9mm

The Twist-Erase is nice if you don't want to have to pull out one of the hi-polymer eraser blocks every time you write, because the sharp automatics have tiny erasers that really shouldn't even be used, but they're both good. The TI-36X Pro is perfectly fine, but the metallic operator buttons, I'll never understand why they made that decision.

>scratchiness
That's because by design, it makes you use the sharpest point at all times, which is not something that you need and ends up making the pencil less reliable, more wobbly, more likely to break graphite, and just more complicated for no fucking real use.

That's why OP has Pentel. They're classic, Japanese-made automatics that have been around since 1962 that you can find at any brick & mortar store with the accompanying erasers/graphite and won't EVER break unless you do something like the Rotring-anon did and drop it on it's tip onto a hard surface at a weird angle from high enough.

If you bought the Pentel Graphgear 1000, then you can have that retractable tip and not worry about it. Who knows how reliable that mechanism is, though. Even on expensive automatics, they seem to always break sooner or later.

Pentel is the only writing instrument manufacturer to receive the prestigious Deming Prize for manufacturing excellence, for what it's worth.

The sharp automatic P209 is just fucking great, though, barring that the eraser is tiny on these sharp automatics and that you basically need to use a separate eraser, which I honestly prefer anyway. I actually prefer my P209 to the Twist-Erase simply because they're skinnier. I pull the clip off and it feels like perfection. They have very slight oval shapes to them so they don't roll on your desk, even without the clip. They're not perfectly circular, anyway. They're like 13-sided or some shit.

ti-84 plus (recently had it updated thanks to a cool calc I teacher), the new OS is sex, I really appreciate the ease of adding more GUI crap as the calc formula additions. I use dixon Ticonderogas and a pencil sharpener that's always with me, they have worked since it was pounded into my via old Calc teacher in highschool and I love them now. Breaking lead is common for me, especially when I'm drawing straight lines against a metal edge. Rarely happens with HB 2s. They're also everywhere in collegiate testing, because scantrons and the sort are designed to read the lead from that pencil.

Sweet, glad there's a thread on this.

I've used a TI-83 (really old) graphing calculator from high school all the way until now, Junior year in uni. I'm taking a physical chemistry course right now and am really feeling the need for a calculator that has a built-in cubic and quadratic solver. Anyone have any recommendations? Price isn't a huge issue.

Unfortunately, the professor does not allow programs beyond built-in solvers, so I can't write one myself -- he wipes your calculator before every exam.

Why would I use anything else? I'm completely serious here. When I was younger I was supposedly diagnosed with dyslexia but even despite the fact that I believe I have it, I can't find any evidence of the diagnosis, but long story short, I'd fucking love to improve my handwriting and stuff like that, if pens and stuff matter then please tell me, I'd love to just relearn spelling and writing from scratch, but I don't know how.

As for calculators, here's my rant from the last calculator thread:

"I use that [Casio FX-9860GII] and a TI-Nspire CX CAS. I wish I never bought the later, by the time it would take for me to learn how to use it, or program on it, I could've just fucking learned maths. Aside from that, it's simply a fact that computers make programmable calculators redundant, you're honestly better off putting some good aps on your phone or learning how to use Wolfram Alpha than you are buying a TI-Nspire, aside from the time and money saved, Wolfram is probably better than the Nspire anyway, for example, I don't know anyway to tell the Nspire to give me equivalent forms of shit, but if I just type something like x^3+9x+5, Wolfram will probably give me 6 different forms of it. Heck, to make matters worse, calculators seem to lie more, and more harshly than computers (go read a basic calculus textbook, it'll give you the warnings)

Maybe I'll change my opinion on that once I'm in the latter years of my [maths] degree course and have found more use in the downloadable shit for the calculator, but otherwise I'm better served by just my head and my Casio fx83GT PLUS.

That being said however, if I was to recommend a calculator for someone who's not restricted by exams or money, I'd probably recommend a different Casio, but I don't know which, stuff like the Prism probably has the same issues as the Nspire, so I'd probably just recommend the best non-programmable ones, I mean those blue things that do graphing and shit, pic related. When I was trying to pick what calculator to buy, I was stuck between pic related, the Prism, the Nspire and the FX-9860GII. (You have no idea how much time that sentence will save you if you're looking to buy the best calculator)

Actually, since this took two posts, for anyone wanting my opinion on calculators:
The Casio FX-991ESPLUS Scientific Calculator is basically the best possible Casio fx83GT PLUS.
If memory serves, the Casio FX-9860GII Graphics Calculator SD is basically a step up from the FX-991 but a step down from the Prism, so I don't see why you'd ever buy it but I suppose it does look more familiar than the Prism.
The Casio FX-CG20, Prism, or whatever the fuck you want to call it is Casio's best, but whenever I looked into things, to me it seemed inferior to the Nspire, so I bought an Nspire, which brings me back to the original post (btw, there's no point in debating which TI is best, the only real downside of the Nspire is that it's not as hackable as the older models, but for that you can just stick to an older version of the software, which can be hacked).

So to summarise:
If you're restricted by exams, get the best calculator you're allowed.
If you're not restricted by exams go for the Casio FX-991ESPLUS Scientific Calculator and just use Wolfram for anything it doesn't do.
If you're not restricted by exams and feel like you need to own a programmable calculator, then be an idiot like me and get the Nspire, but I don't know why you would.

There's also the HP Prime, but I don't see why you'd buy it when the Nspire and Prism exist."

Using a Pentel Twist-Erase III as an example, which is probably what I'd recommend to everyone that doesn't want to spend more than like $4: the quality is just right. It's not so good that they cost like $15 each, but it's miles better than any other plastic made in china trash you'll buy. The pencil breaks in half to replace lead. They will hold at least 10 pieces, which is about five pencils. They have hi-polymer graphite and erasers, which just means it's more durable, less likely to break. They're designed as drafting pencils, which have sharper points, which allows you to see what you're writing and makes you write better. They have weight to them, which makes writing much more pleasant.

The shit is just better and doesn't cost that much.

The Twist-Erase III is the best pencil you'll ever use. It's inexpensive, but not cheaply made. You have a huge, easily changeable eraser that retracts to stay flush with the pencil, not allowing it to be broken off or fucked up in your bag etc.. it holds loads of graphite that is easily replaced by pulling the pencil in half. It feels good. It's inexpensive. It's better in every single way to a traditional pencil. I don't know how you would use anything else after switching.

I've found it cheaper, make that £10 for the pencil and 60 refills, that seems like a good deal if the pencil really is all that awesome, but I could get it cheaper if I knew the difference between the other pencils and picked a cheaper one.

So, why do anons have things like the Casio FX-9860GII or high grade TIs like a 89, when they're clearly not the best available, but are both not allowed in exams? (The Prism/FX-CG20 is undebatably the best Casio, and the NSpire is undebatably the best TI)

Is it just that they bought them a while ago, when they were the best calculator(s) on the market and they've simply lasted so long that they've never needed to replace them?

Me again. I've got the pencil now. Maybe it's because I'm used to pound shop shitty pencils, but just as a first impression, the Twist-erase seems pretty fucking legit.

It's a pencil, but it writes like a pen, dyslexia and motor skill difficulties will make this hard to explain, but it feels like I have grip, but the page is not resisting me. The rubber is near perfect btw, I'm starting to regret not buying a spare.

One thing that stands out to me though, the leds are smaller than I expected, according to the packaging they're 6cm long, but you're typical pencil is easily in the 12-14cm range. So each lead is like half a pencil, meaning a refill containing 15 leads (it cost me £3.79 for 3 refills, so we'll say £1.30 for each refill), is like 7 pencils, so you're only saving money if you can't find HB pencils for less than like 19p each. That is, assuming that the both the leds of the pencil and the Twist-Erase never break, and that you find the two to be of equal quality, and that the 0.9mm leads last half as long as a normal HB pencil would, I've got no idea what the normal thickness is.

>>7507093
Right, I mentioned above that one piece of lead is basically half of a standard wood pencil. The twist-erase is shorter than a wooden pencil, so needs shorter lead.

The lead in my .9mm has never, ever broken and I have used it for over a year.

There is not set thickness on a pencil because you sharpen it down to a point. the draft pencils have sharp tips already as the tip as drafters need to be able to see what they're writing very easily, so the lead is supposed to always be a perfect point.

then you're also getting the huge eraser that will last for a long time and a better feeling and more reliable utensil at the end of it. I used to use my sharp, but at this point I only use a .9mm twist-erase III.

pic very related. I think i paid like $2 at my local staples. 45 wooden pencils are basically in that, but the lead is high-polymer and it's a thicker point, so breaking it is very hard. You also only carry around one or two of these instead of 45 fucking wood pencils and a sharpener.

I actually tested it out myself, and tried to break one of the pieces, and you literally have to take the piece of lead out of the pencil and bend it with both hands until the bend is so exaggerated that is just snaps in half and you put it back in. it's not like shitty lead where it breaks into like ten pieces.

okay

They're made in china. The eraser and lead is trash. the build quality is a low quality plastic that i can break just by throwing it against a wall or squeezing with my hand. the design is generic and not useful as the tip is not pointed and made out of plastic. the internal mechanism is not as well made as something from a Staedler, Rotring, Pentel etc would be. If we're going to compare the pencils in your picture to just a Twist-Erase, it's pants-on-head stupid to suggest that yours are better.

The twist erase has an erase that consists of probably ten of those tiny ones. You don't have to take the eraser out to add graphite. You can fit more graphite inside. It is made with higher quality materials, allows a more tactile click that will last as long as you own the pencil due to a better design with higher quality components. The internal design from yours allows for more wobble than it ever would on any draft pencil. it's also just not made for writing like a draft pencil is. the tip shape is just shit.

tl;dr your pencils are junk that any soccer mom will buy in a 10-pack for her gay son when he goes off to his liberal arts college for a BA in psychology because "he just gets people"

I prefered my old windows phone calc but my galaxy app does the job.
I prefer just using paper and mechanical pencils .5 (i prefer .3 but as .5 is 10x cheaper where I live) that you buy on the super market when your is bronken and you is tired of using hex pencils and having to sharping it every 10 min.
I also have an cassio from the 70s or 80s, but never really used it.
And of course a 500 sheets sulfit paper box + small square papers pack for theories.
