Undergraduate starting a Finance major next year. I was wondering if /sci/ could give me a list of "pre-requisite" mathematical knowledge I should get down before I start. The University wasn't much help.

I'm learning some Algebra at the moment, I don't need to be spoonfed specific sites I figured KhanAcademy would be good, but what sort of stuff should I learn/get down? I don't live in the US if it makes any difference.

Thanks guys, have a good night.

I suggest you learn statistics. It's not technically a "pre-requisite" because they will teach you what you need to know, but statistics is very difficult if you only know "what you need" rather than why it works.

Wait, wait, wait... you're learning algebra? fucking lol. LITERALLY ELEMENTARY KNOWLEDGE.

Literally the worst major to go into finance with.

Not learning as much as brushing up on it, knew the basics but was a bit unsure on some of the less elementary stuff

>>7490898
yeah I've heard this, really not sure what else to major in as although I respect econ just aren't keen on it, and accounting makes me want to end it

For mathematical finance you need at least

HS Algebra
Trigonometry
Calculus
Linear Algebra
Ordinary Differential Equations
Partial Differential Equations
Numerical Analysis
Real Analysis
Measure Theory
Probability Theory
Statistics

Applied mathematics or experimental physics or some shit. To prove that you can actually crunch those numbers.

Maths isnt good enough for anything like that, figured finance would be a good challenge for me, respect for people that do that STEM shit because its not for me lol

And what are you learning, asshole? There is not some dichotomy of mathematics students, where the more experienced are allowed to belittle the lesser. Even the experts that are at the top of their field know next to nothing compared to what knowledge is out there waiting, and if we work together and learn together, more and more of that knowledge will become accessible. Everybody is in a different place with what they know, and we all have one thing in common: a desire to learn even more. Your attitude is a disease that has been plaguing the academic community for far too long.

Except you didn't say finance undergraduate. You said finance in general. Not every person in the field is some frat boy who gets a job with daddy's connections and can barely value an option or work a pivot table. That's why your comment was stupid.

Ah yes, good. Finally there's a little wisdom on this board.
