Physics Illusion/Magic Trick

Hey guys, today my Physics uni professor pulls out a cylinder/can and has it with four punctures in the can and four pieces of rope sticking out of them.

He pulled the top left part of the rope and it shortened the right. He did the same with the right except it lengthened the bottom right.

At first I assumed they were clearly tied up in a four rope to one knot ratio with the knot in the center.


However he pulled the upper right portion of the string and it lengthened the bottom right.

He later went on to pull the final upper left which triggered the bottom right rope.


I have absolutely no idea how that was possible and now I'm giving you guys a brainteaser

That is literally all I can extract because I have no idea how the can looked with the ropes in it. You gave no relative context whatsoever.

It would be similar to me posting saying:
