PSAT, during sophomore? HS (I think everyone took it in school #forfree): something like 98th percentile, they gave me some "Good Job Kid" paper for that one. A particularly bright peer or two went on to some other tier of testing, but I did not.

Old SAT, took exactly once: 1460/1600, even 730/730 split on math and durr word games. Again, I remember this as ~98th percentile at the time.

(old I guess) ACT: 31/36. Also took exactly once. Sectional breakdown was something like 32 word association bit, 31 math, 29? reading-ish bit, 28 science "lol read graphs" bit.

I didn't study much for either one, just a day or two beforehand to get certain details right (periods of functions come to mind), and I was satisfied with both so I didn't see any reason to re-take, esp. the SAT which had the hazard of dragging down with a bad re-take IIRC.

I had no fancy prep either. The best thing I did was borrow the blue book with 10 tests from the College Board from a friend. I simply took the tests and saw where my weak points were. The writing section is the only one which requires memorization. Reading was always easy for me so that didn't take much work. Math was the issue with me for some reason despite the fact I was good at the subject. I would always get the last few questions wrong. I then discovered that the last few math questions were written cleverly so that you would think that they were asking one question when they were truly asking something else. All it took was for me to read those questions more carefully and WABAH!, an 800.

It's kind of a gradient.
At the top tiers, mid-high 2100's won't hinder you, (it'll get you past the most cursory examinations, mixed with high GPA), but it's not gonna for sure get you into a competitive program. 2200-2300 is enough for most of the most selective schools, like Yale (~7%), Stanford (5%), MIT (9%), Berkeley Engineering (9%). 2300-2400 is obviously the highest you can get, and is really a high point on any application. But even that won't guarantee you a spot.
