I'm not quite sure to be very honest, I study political science. Most people here aren't interested in stem, however, I will say that we probably have a more selective group of stem students, despite our program being inferior to other schools nearby (which of course isn't saying really anything). I just figured asking how /sci/ your school is would be the best starting comment for this sort of thread.

I'm only going to school because they're paying me to though.

I'm on quite a scholarship, that didn't cover a portion of the Room and Board.
But me being a charismatic manipulator, I was able to land a job as a Resident Advisor back in my freshman year. Now I make a net gain of 3k every year. Which isn't bad considering that I'm getting a degree out of it.

I'm just curious as to why people choose eng. im currently a math/physics major and I've been seriously considering switching to eng. I chose math/physics because I wanted an academic career and I never really grew up fiddling with electronics or machines so I thought engineering wouldnt suit me but my career outlook isn't looking so good

>> No.7410625

>>7410577
Years ago I was dissuaded from going into engineering physics at UIUC - behind closed doors faculty advised me that in good times it would work out ok, but in bad times companies would only hire the straight up engineers and not the eng phys kids.

Maybe things have changed.

(I ended up in chemistry and that didn't work out well, job wise, for me.)

Engineering Physics is a degree you use for a bachelor's and then apply to either engineering PHD programs or Applied physics programs.

One of the best /sci schools in general. The Medical school is only second to Emory and Duke. The SAE program is in the top 5 (this is relevant for Mech Eng).

Engineering Physics is a great degree to take if you plan to go to grad school, since you have a more open schedule to pick more field-related courses.

I dunno if I could really say I "fiddled with electronics"- I did a lot more in HS, but I used to take apart computers when I was younger, and I loved reading about the design flaws and techniques used in things like the Titanic, etc.
I chose engineering because I like to deal with physical systems and their applications.
>>7410620
It's a pretty cool field, although it seems really underutilized as far as industry goes.
Seems like a lot of innovation is happening, but no one takes advantage of it.
