They are tensor equations, each tensor can be represented by a 4x4 matrix so each of the components of the matrices gives an equation. This leads to 16 equations however the tensors are symmetric so terms like R_10 and R_01 are the same thing which brings it down to 10 equations.

Each of the things with subscripts is a (0,2) tensor, which you can think of as a matrix function of spacetime. There's an equation for each component of the full matrix equation.

The matrices are 4x4 (for three spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension) and are also symmetric, so they have 10 independent components.
