What is the degree of statistical literacy among people living in the US?

>> No.7363979

TBH according to anecdotal experience it's close to nil

>> No.7363988

>>7363964
not your personal google search engine

>>7363964

People know what a "mean" is once you remind them it's another word for "average".

I'd say that's about it. Which is really a shame. I think a decent knowledge of statistics would be far more useful to most people than something like pre-calculus, or calc I.

heh

>> No.7363999

According to the latest polls, 95% of Americans only understand 55% of statistics, which translates to 150% confusion.

Eh, if they knew more businesses/political interest groups would just have to work a little harder to fuck them over.

>> No.7364002

>>7363964
Seeing as how 90% of statistics have problems with their accumulation methods, I'd say it's pretty low.

>it's another word for "average".

Wrong. The mean is one type of average. The median is another example of an average.

How much stats can you teach without calculus though?

10 coins, at least 9 heads, one's probably tails
Can't explain that

Seems like a problem with his accumulation methods...

Calculus is used to make music and predict the weather. You can't use statistics to find the slope of a curve.

You can use them to efficiently manage risks and symptoms of cancer.

Regression is essentially measuring slopes with statistics...

>> No.7364469

I'm not trying to say whether, or not statistics has more applications as a whole than calculus. I'm saying that, for the average person, an understanding of statistics and how they can be manipulated to make things look a certain way would be more useful than an understanding of the main concepts of pre-calculus/calculus I.

>> No.7364476

Why do you all about the U.S. In particular? Do you have some reason to believe the level of "statistical literacy" there is especially high or low?

>> No.7364656

>>7364476
Well, I guess any developed country would do

Just saying, a knowledge of statistics to interpret weather.. even climate forecasts would go a long way.
