A hugbox is a device that is used to calm hypersensitive persons, particularly those on the autism spectrum, it calms the autist by providing deep pressure stimulation, thereby relieving stress. /pol/ is a place where autists go to be calmed by having there views affirmed, therefore the word "hugbox" is often attached to boards whose principle users often have ridged social views (/pol/ and /v/ for example) as these boards are places where users vent their anger and frustrations at the world, "hugbox" is an adequate descriptor.

In a more general sense "hugbox" is taking artistic licence with the English language, using a pre-existing concept to describe another, different concept.
