You are now consciously aware that the next chicken you eat had dinosaur ancestors.

What is the significance of this?

Genetic engineering of birds would allow you to make dinosaurs. Just have to flip on the right DNA bits in a series of chicken mutants, while turning off the bird DNA.

You were born too late to reeingineer dinosaurs as your high school biology project for the semester

>> No.7331498

>>7331369
Well, not quite. There's still 150 million years of genetic divergence from anything that would actually be considered a dinosaur. A chicken is ~230 million years of evolutionary change away from a T Rex. Some of that is epigenetic, but on that time frame, certainly not all.

Now that you mention it, has the 'Chickenosaurus' project progressed any further or was Jack Horner full of shit?
I know that a research team has recently 'engineered' beakless chicken embryos with alligator-like muzzles, but they didn't let them hatch.

>The researchers did not actually hatch the eggs, says Bhullar, because they did not write that step into their approved research protocol. Instead, they discerned differences in the faces of ready-to-hatch chicks, which looked subtly different from chicks without their proteins inhibited. The altered chicks still had a flap of skin over their would-be beaks, so the difference is not obvious, says Bhullar. "But if you saw the skeleton, you’d just be very confused," he says. "I would not say we gave birds snouts.”

Technically a cassowary is a theropod if you ignore paraphyletic demarcation. But if you're going to do that then you've also got to recognize a cassowary is a fucked up looking worm.
