So, the big amount of mathematicians jumping into philosophy is because of... The amount of abstract concepts found in maths, that could have a deeper explanation with a philosophy's approach?

>> No.7321510

>>7321354
Most higher level mathematics course is purely proofs, which are deduced from logic, which falls under the field of philosophy. I'll probably get a bunch of people saying that my generalization is incorrect and "hurr durr this field of math doesn't require philosophy" who gives a fuck most of it does, and call me batshit crazy but I personally believe that there is a correlation between logic and mathematics.
So if you grant that for the most part, logic is used in most advanced fields of mathematics as well as the fact that logic is covered under the scope of philosophy, philosophy and math are interconnected to some extent. Not all philosophy is math (Ethics, political, aethetics) But MOST math falls under philosophy (Logic).

A math b degree doesn't prepare you for a career in anything, not even in math, a PhD will prepare you for a math research career, but it's extremely competitive.

The memes about math being able to do anything is obviously bullshit. You need a professional degree like an accredited engineering bachelors for most jobs. Math PhD researchers do often work closely with engineers and physicists both in academia/nat labs and private sector which is where the memes arise from.

as this anon said, a math degree doesn't really prepare you for a career, however, you can take as many operations research or statistics courses you can, those are one of few things in math that can be applied to real world careers

I got my B.S. in Physics and Applied Mathematics and I can tell you no fucking way. In my experience math people are usually terrible at physics. You see, in engineering and physics the math part is the easy part, its the physics (i.e. the logic behind the math) that is the tough part.

If you really wanted to go for engineering you should go for a masters in an engineering field. Otherwise, tough luck you're more than likely not going to get hired to do an engineers job. I had a hard time getting an engineering job as a physicists but I had a lot of internships during my undergrad that pertained to engineering so that helped a lot.
