So /sci/, what's the consensus on joining the military, specifically the us air force? is it good for engineering careers? do I learn useful things? I just want to be like Big Boss and serve my country while not shooting myself in the foot career-wise ;-;

>> No.7301617

It'll be entirely what you make it. If you shrug you're way through life it won't matter where you go or serve. Grab that shit by the balls and make something of it and you'll go far. Not the most concise but true as far as my life has been concerned.

Join the world's biggest, most wasteful bureaucracy, work along side welfare queens and psychopaths, and maybe blow up a school or two!

It's a last resort if you need to turn your life around in a big way.

OP here. If I join I'd like to join through my Unit's ROTC program so I can be an officer and actually hopefully do cool tech shit. I'm mainly asking in those terms.

From what I hear, the airforce is full of /pol/esmokers. At least go navy.

give an example of a military that's not what you just described

Get your degree first. Go enlisted, learn the dirty work, become an officer later. Officers are more about oversight, enlistees get their hands dirty

explain?

USAF just comes to mind since my Uni has ROTC for it, there's an airbase nearby, and they're supposed to be working with lots more tech than other branches right?

sorry, meant my uni. I'm majoring in Electrical Engineering and want to do the AFROTC program there. I feel like enlisted would be kind of a waste of time and I wouldn't get to do much cool stuff. Whatre the differences?

That's what I never understood about you /sci/ types — you're supposedly intelligent, yet, when it comes to things not covered in your textbooks, lectures, and B-rated documentaries narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, you have absolutely no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

Whats the consensus about joining the military to pay for your education. I'd love to be a doctor but my family is on the poor side of middle class and theres no way i can afford med school. Should I join the military or is debt the better option?

Leaning useful things all depends on what type of job you have. A lot of the jobs, aircraft maintainer, medical, some of the computer-type shit jobs, translate very well to the outside world. Some of them, not so much(cook, SP, etc).

I t all depends on what you do when you get out. In any case, you're likely to have a fair amount of downtime once you get out of tech school, so use it wisely. Any college classes you want to take are free, and you'll have the GI Bill when you get out. If you're not planning on making a career out of the military, make the most of the opportunities it affords so you'll be in good shape when you get out.

Aside from techinal knowledge and education opportunities, enlisting teaches you a lot about organization, teamwork and how to pass for a decent human being. I'd recommend it to any young person that doesn't already have their life mapped out.
