Its easy to see that with time-like geodesics (when L=g_{u, v}x'^{u} y'^{v} = 1 along the geodesics) the geodesic equation drops out of the Euler-Lagrange equations but if L=g_{u, v}x'^{u} y'^{v} = 0 along the null-geodesics how can we use the Euler-Lagrange equations?
