Also, that book is the very definition of padding.

Why would we be sorry? You're learning CS on your own like you should be.

>The UNIX Programming Environment

this more than anything else

not directly programming, but it's an essential introduction into using a CLI

programming is to cs as writing is to math, if someone asked you for mathbooks would you suggest they learn to read/write first?

Yes? How will you learn to do with math if you can't read first? I understand what you are trying to say, and I agree with you, but that was an awful analogy.

>> No.7234534

>>7234397
Yeah, I'm sure 99% of math majors go on to become writers.

You are so dumb.

also
how do you feel about going into masters right after finishing bachelor's?

Are you reasonably good with debugging code, finding faults in numerical methods and models, writing automation scripts, and optimizing I/O for parallel processes? I mean, do you even know about these things?

If so, then computational physics or chem will suck your soul away when you see the kind of code that gets written by the old guard... but it's also kind of rewarding. You can quickly become a respected member of your field because you'll be solving problems in a couple weeks that will take experienced researchers a year or more. When I was a master's student, I was getting regular requests for data from people who'd published 70 papers over the past 50 years. It was awesome.

Except... academia sucks balls, and I don't recommend doing a master's degree at all unless you accept that you're probably just doing it for your own benefit, and that you are prepared to abandon the academic life with no regrets when it becomes clear why you should do so (and it will).
