What's /sci/ doing for summer? Anyone got a cool job? A cool internship maybe?

Tell us about it!

>be me
>math major at a good school
>good grades
>applied to about different 50 internship
>heard back from <30% of places I applied to
>got 1 interview (didn't get it)
>I even said to one place that I'd work for nothing and only for experience because it's so close to me (20min away).

When I graduate next year, I'm sure I'll have even 'funner' time! Anyway, looks like I'll be shitposting on here and working at a cell phone store part time this summer.

>> No.7185930

so no one got any summer internships?

That really sucks, OP.
I got my first REU project this summer and it's something I actually like. Just got lucky though. I applied to 6 places and only got this one response.

If you get good grades as a math major at a good school, and only heard back from 30% of jobs you applied to, you're doing something wrong. At my school math majors who got good grades had one of the highest rates of interviews. The good math majors got interviews at investment banking and other business jobs with a higher success rate than the good business school kids, even though my school's undergrad business school is way more prestigious than our undergrad math.

>>7186001

It's pretty selective since it's not exactly a huge industry, but if you have an advanced degree and a strong resume it's doable.

I'd rather kill myself than spend my life working in finance. I can't think of something more worthless and boring than fucking finance.

Yeah, I don't get why people even get excited about that crap. I always wondered if it's really just a bunch of pea brains who are actually challenged by memorizing simple arithmetic and think they're bad ass.

That kind of shit makes me really consider just giving up and climbing the corporate ladder at my part-time job and becoming a middle manager. It'd be easy and the job would be quite secure. But it seems so dull, ugh.

Majored in Cognitive Science and working on stats minor. Didn't specialize in AI, so my only option is usability/ergonomics/human computer interaction (and I'll be lucky if I can pull a job out of undergrad w/o a masters). If I can pull a portfolio together before I graduate undergrad, I'll be ok. If not, I need enough research experience for grad school, then maybe apply for microshit/amazon/big tech company.

Anyone have any idea how to approach this?

I am a very humble person as well and I'm a STEM and Japanese Major who applied for study abroad research funds to write a report on my findings about Japanese culture. There is another girl on the same program who is also applying for the same thing am I am applying for except she is asking for more money for camera and tripod equipment. She is a law major and has a scholarship that pays for most of her tuition already and could potential get more "exceptional funding" for the summer.

She hasn't turned in her application yet and I turned mine as soon as possible and wrote a very concise proposal. Knowing how eloquent these law types can be I believe she might get the funding even though this year twice as many applied for the funding compared to last year.

I'm not going to be bitter if I don't get the funding but that is how the law of the world works. Knowing my passion for research and STEM knowledge I'll probably go far with it anyways.

im in my third year of a physics major
last spring i didn't relaly put that much effort into tryign to get research
this summer i made very personal (referencing their research) emails to 20 profs including those at my home institution and the institution where my parents live and would spend summer if i dont get something here. a lot didn't respond, some were traveling, some couldn't pay me. If getting basic bitch undergrad research is this hard, i dont' think i want to go into academia.... Too bad i don't have a plan B
