Alright /sci/, my school's taking me on a trip to NASA where we'll be talking with some astronauts on the ISS, and they want me to ask them a question. Now I've been thinking for a while and I've got nothing good, can you help me out?

any star that is close enough to be individually resolved is within the Milky Way, which is only 100,000 LY across. Such stars are less than 1/10th of a million years older than you observe them as.

so yeah, picking at your numbers. there ARE stars that have probably gone boom since the light we currently see left them, but the travel time is much shorter than the pic states.

(a prominent almost-example is Betelgeuse, which has a couple hundred thousand years left on it maybe. but it's only ~600 LY away, so it's probably still going strong right now.)

Fuck why is this thread dead?

Okay, OP:

>What do you think of NASA's current vision and approach to space travel, do you feel it's as aimless and tame as many say it is?

>What would you propose as the next step for the continued presence and expansion of human civilizatio in space?

>Do you think private companies will outshine NASA or will they remain a small fraction of total launches and an insignificant one of the actual advances in astronautics?

>What's the most impressive space feat you expect to see in your lifetime?

>If you had complete control over the US' space policy what project would you launch?

>What would you say is the next step after chemical rockets?

>Do you think current nationalistic and conflictive trends in world politics will hinder space efforts or eventually kickstart a second space race?

>Can jet fuel melt steel beams?
