I agree, it's a dead give away that that person has never worked in a lab professionally. Labcoats fucking suck and they're extremely uncomfortable, especially in labs with equipment that generate a lot of heat. Unless you work in a very wet lab there's no reason to wear it.

No. Can't speak for OP of course. I hope your colleagues didn't report it, that would mean the end of their career. The reactor temperatures we operate would instantly vaporize lab coat material anyway.

>Plus I keep nearly tipping glassware over because my sleeves don't do what my arms do.
Learn some coordination and read up on some basic ergonomics, this should never happen even with lab coats.

Work in a CMO commercial lab. Being in the UK we have Howie style labcoats with high collars and tight cuffs. The analytical guys carry out a lot of ELISAs and mass spec, so the lab has tightly regulated temperature and humidity, so feeling uncomfortable is not an excuse.
Basic lab PPE is legs covered, labcoat buttoned up all the way and ballistic glasses. You wear nitriles or barriers for any chemical work. You don't wear the right ppe you get a disciplinary write up. I'm very glad of it, having had the stuff save my eyesight and clothing on several occasions. Cocky new PhDs flout the rules sometimes, they do it twice they get sacked. Companies can't afford to show lack of control to the HSE.

Are you kidding me? You're supposed to wear them only in the lab. Wearing them outside only shows stupidity, especially if they're dirty. Lab coats are there to protect you from hazardous chemicals. But if you're walking around in them outside you're just endangering others and yourself. I can almost guarantee you that wearing a (stained) lab coat to an interview will not give you bonus points.

Wearing gloves when it's not needed is bad practice. It harms your hands more than it does good. Your hands can't "breathe" in them.

Over here all lab classes require you to wear lab coats, even if the lab itself is fairly safe.

>>7069933
Lab coats are okay, but it really depends on the lab. They don't always require that you wear them, and if they don't it's normal that you don't - not sure what the problem is here. You don't wear safety goggles 24/7 either.

If you're working with hazardous and/or volatile chemicals on a regular basis you should probably wear a lab coat. If you work with animals, lab coats (usually disposable ones) are typically mandatory to prevent allergies and also to prevent you from carrying infections into the animal facility.

What bothers me more is when I see tons of people wearing lab coats in the cafeteria. This is the department of medicine, so a lot of these people have probably been in contact with patients, and if you wear your lab coat when you eat lunch it defeats the entire point of wearing a lab coat in the first place.
