An engineer, a physicist and a mathematician are told to design and build a table.

The engineer designs an ordinary table. It stands up.

The physicist designs two halves of a table. They don't support each other and fall over.

The mathematician designs a table with N legs. He spends the rest of his life generalizing the results for the table with N legs.

I have a better one. An engineer, a physicist and a mathematician are sleeping in separate rooms in a hotel (in order to avoid all risks of copulation, let's assume the engineer is a man and the other two are women). Suddenly, a fire declares in the hotel, but since the place is in Latvia, the technology of smoke detectors isn't available, so the two scientists and the engineer keep sleeping.

The fire reaches the room of the engineer first. Awoken by the smell, the engineer take his bag, fill it with water at the sink of the room and throw it at the fire, then go back to sleep while swearing copiously.

But there's still fire in the corridor, and soon the physicist is awoken by the heat. Looking at the evacuation plan on the door of her room, she quickly calculates the shortest path to the next extinguisher, and deals with the fire. She then goes back to sleep.

However all the fire has only been extinguihed with a success rate of 90%. Soon the mathematician is awoken because she had forgotten the coordinate expression of the function h->h^3 over the quaternions and needed it for her dream. While reaching for her books, she notices the fire. Looking intently at it for a few minutes, she finally declares: "there is a solution !" with a satisfied smile, and goes back to sleep. She wakes up a few minutes after, worried. "Is it unique ?".

An engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician are told to design and build a table.

The mathematician devises and solves an optimization problem, concluding that the more legs a table has, the more stable it is. He then proceeds to build a table with infinite legs.

The physicist starts with the prototypical four-legged table, and begins to improve on the design. He begins work on a table which is 50% lighter than the original table, and 200% more energy efficient.

The engineer looks at the table he is under, and plans to construct a similar model. He begins construction on a table, but unfortunately he is too busy sucking cock.

The engineer prepares to take a shot, first aiming carefully along the sights of his rifle, but the bullet flies three feet to the left of his target in a spray of dirt. Almost immediately the physicist fires, but his shot flies three feet to the right.

The engineer took the bet and proceeded to construct a fence that was as close to circular as it could be given the length of chicken wire and the number of posts. He was quite amused to find that the mathematician had stuck all his posts together and wrapped the chicken wire around the bundle.
