Has there ever been a point in your life where you were so caught up in worry about your own intelligence/skills/etc.that it was holding you back? How did you get over it?

No, I don't.

Most people are plebs, and there being more clever people isn't negative - the docrine for status and success is a matra of our society producing productive and efficient drones, the clever people are generally not at all the happy ones. Enjoy your subject.

My problem is that worries like these are keeping me back from being as clever as I'm capable. Comparing myself to others is what's holding me back, but I want to fix it so I can be closer to my best, not so I can be some super genius.

I go in and out of this too.
I feel much better by creating metrics and setting realistic goals.

Im learning piano now and sight reading is the master goal. To get there I use metrics to measure performance (certain songs and a metronome).
I also mentally stop or change my train of thought if I feel envious of someone else's progress or ability.

Its slow progress just plugging away, but you cant really go backwards right.

I've both had this problem and conquered it.

View it as a cycle of learning and acting. You learn so you can act (even if imperfectly). Then you learn from your actions, and maybe take some down time to learn again. I've had 6-month blocks in my life where I was more focused on learning and googling random things, and 6 month periods where I was more social and built things or did more work or something.

This is the nature of a somewhat introverted person. We get addicted to learning because it makes us feel safe, superior, we'll prepared, etc. [citation needed]. And while those things are true and useful, they can become over-prioritized.

Your cycle is just stuck because you're afraid or directionless.

Go do something.

When you are smart, and people recognize that you are smart, you are sometimes afraid to try because you are afraid to fail, and dispel the notion that you are smart.

You need to get over that fear of failure and get in the game. The only way to increase your rate of success is to increase your rate of failure.
