But really, I have a B.A. (lol IKR!) from a traditional four-year college, with a major in mathematics. Shortly after I graduated, the department restructured in such a way as to offer either a B.S. or a B.A. associated with the major - out of curiosity, I checked their website and the only difference between the two tracks are two higher classes in algebra and analysis to earn the B.S. Dunno why they bothered tbh.

Oh yeah and this one time in HS I was bored in German class and was playing with the Fibonacci sequence and found that the ratios of its consecutive terms converge to the golden ratio, before google or anyone else told me. I saved that scrap of paper for years, I was so proud.

Got a BS in Physics. Working on a physics PhD, may or may not finish it. Graduate E&M murdered my GPA last semester and I'm not eager about my chances of passing the quals.

Plan on giving it my best shot, though.

Worst case scenario is I move back to my hometown and use my connections to land a job with one of the big engineering firms in town making $60,000 a year so I'm not super worried, I'm mainly trying to earn the PhD for myself more than the bigger paycheck.

3rd-year astrophysics major. In the summers I work at the uni observatory and get to be a chump running supply/coffee/sneakernet file transfer runs or pulling all-nighters physically monitoring the telescopes while the observatory director dicks about with remotely configuring them on campus.

It's fun and I get to pull and analyze random images if the weather's shitty and I have nothing to do. Pic related, did this while bored using some calibration images using our small h-alpha filter telescope that we can point at the sun.

I have a BS in math, I'm working on an MS.

Really I don't know anything, I have a kinda-sorta OK grasp on undergraduate real analysis, no fucking clue what is going on in my graduate class, I remember a tiny bit of number theory and algebra, and I have a decent understanding of low level theoretical linear algebra focused on numerics although I suck too much at programming to implement any of the code. I know quite a bit of statistics but that's about it.

I'm vastly more educated than 99% of the population including all the CC kids and underclassmen on /sci/ but compared to the 1% or maybe .5% or probably more like .1% who actually know a lot of math I'm clueless.

As far as science goes, I took IB HL physics and chem and know those subjects pretty well through the intro level but haven't taken any classes. I haven't taken bio since 10th grade but I took a bunch of botany and horticulture classes in college and know quite a bit about plant biology and agronomy, of course none of that counts as science by /sci/ standards.

You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting jacob barnett so we can kick your ass. Not only am I extensively trained in mathematics, but I have access to the entire arsenal of geniuses like jacob barnett and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of any math competition. take the GRE not GMAT
be careful, not sure what your grades are but top notch GRE+decent grades without any research or work experience will not be enough to get you into a top tier quant program. if you're not yet a senior, find a summer internship in finance or data analytics, that will be hands down the biggest help for your applications.

it should go without saying you need to learn C++ or fortran or java and ideally Python as well, grad school is all about programming, you'd honestly be better off with a CS than a math major.

we don't need permission to take the grad classes, but typically you have to be at least a junior for most of them, some require the instructor's approval.

I just looked it up and at my school only 9 credits worth of grad courses (like 3 classes) taken during your undergrad can count toward a graduate degree.
