Not only do are emotions real and affect everyone in ways we don't even understand, they are also what gives life meaning. This is the core of my philosophy regarding logic vs emotions these days. We work and try to be efficient so that we have more resources to do what we want aka to do the things that give us good feelings. Not a single voluntary behavior of any kind is ever motivated by anything other than the thought that it will provide us good feelings in the long run. It is almost like the consciousness's job to plan what will provide us with good emotions and give us the ability to temporarily experience negative emotions in the hopes that it will pay off in the long run. Evolution has shown us many useful mechanisms and feelings as a source of motivation is one of the greatest that goes completely unnoticed, as all creatures with a complex brain experience feelings. If a bird could talk and you asked it why it flew south for the winter, it would probably say something like "I just felt like it." Know that all behavior is driven by feelings.
