I don't think you understand quite how ridiculous Florida in-state tuition with bright futures is, I got paid ~$1800 net to graduate from UF, that was getting paid ~$900 a semester until I hit 120 hours my senior year and paying a grand total of like $2800 for both semesters still leaving me in the positive.

I got a scholarship to USC but even with 75% tuition covered it still cost more in one semester than 3 years of UF, I did my freshman year there before realizing what a ridiculous waste of money it was. Of course if I'd actually gotten into a top 10 school on a scholarship, I would have attended, but the top universities don't even offer merit scholarships so with my middle-class parents it would have been ~$162,000 just to get to go to college with richfags, not a very good deal, the people at USC were fucking douchebag pricks enough let alone a real elite school.

My sister's 30... still working on her Master's in PSYCHOLOGY, even when she got tons of military help (literally served a full Reserve contract and had 3 tours in the Middle East)

Actually really disappointed in her, but she's probably ADHD.

>feel so behind
That's... part of the reason why I may have lost a friend. Talking about being behind when a 43 y/o friend has three kids and is trying to get a degree while still being as much of a stay-at-home-mom as she can. She plans to divorce her husband, already works part time, and still has another two years for her Bachelor's. Working about as well as it sounds.

I also tutor and we had a guy that will be 60 if he can finish his Master's on time (part time). I believe it will be his first degree.

You can probably find older people to dick around with, or at least a club with such energetic people.

As a tutor, I spent the largest chunk of time talking with a blind teacher. Dude is like 50 but we got along well. I had a bad habit of that, being a lot more comfortable and talkative with older people.

I literally had no friends my age. Only friend from my classes I'll definitely want to see again is the aforementioned 43 y/o. we both have ADHD and overlapped a bit in personality and stuff we liked, from intimacy She is also from Peru, and does not speak English too well.

Did you do research internships? If so, and if you weren't a catastrophe, you'll have to work it out with your grad studies manager depending on your school's requirements (mine required a lowly 3.2) but it should be fine. Grad school requirements aren't as hard as actual industry requirements. If not, try to get a prof's recommendation if you performed particularly well in a class, especially if you're interested in the subject of that class. One takes 6 classes at the master's level and 3 classes at the PhD level, typically (on top of a general exam if PhD). Grading is 30 units for research and 15 credits for classes as master's, and 90 credits for research along with 15 credits for classes (not sure about this one) for PhD, so there's a lot more weighing for the research than the classes. Even then, the classes are a research-agnostic gate you have to pass, and apparently the general exam is extremely hard. I've got 1-2 years to go before it becomes a real concern, but heh.

I regret every late night spent studying and laboring over pedantic minutiae. If you want to get ahead, there are much better ways to do it.

How many people here go to universities that have A+'s that count as 4.3333 on your GPA? I feel like I'm getting an unfair advantage going to one that does that, like my 4.0 isn't legitimate since I wouldn't have it if it weren't for A+'s.

>> No.6959206

>>6959201
I also get 4.3 with A+'s. It's not an unfair advantage usually because (at least in my case) our A's are actually harder to get than people on a 4.0 scale (I honestly don't know why that is, but I have ascertained this is true by comparing to people I know from other universities with a 4.0 scale). Beside, for comparison's sake, your GPA would usually be rescaled linearly.

well a bit of googling seems to support that UCSD has a solid machine learning program.

i understand game theory and machine learning arent directly related, im a computational math fag interested in finance and economics so i can see applications of both, im not trying to go into either subject as a career just take a few grad classes and explore the possibilities

i suppose there's some truth to that, but im not too concerned with the quality of the teaching, i can teach myself the material either way. but having a professional researcher to help out with my own attempts at applying ML to research seems like it would be very helpful, i guess a good program isnt important so long as there are some half decent professors doing ML research.

but, im in grad school so the professors are the teachers, not like they have TAs teaching graduate classes, and having my professor/teachers be very knowledgeable and experienced in the field is more valuable to me than having them be good teachers.

If you've actually gotten several, you shouldn't have to consider anything any longer.

High school junior here. Pulled all As in 5 APs (and 2 Gen ed classes). 4.45 weighted now. My father died this semester as well.

My favorite class this year is AP Calc BC. We covered integrals and are about to move on after the break.

Studying some econ in my free time so I can take the AP test this year. Hopefully I can score well...my school doesn't offer the course so it's all independent study.

Got a 34 ACT couple months ago...need to go for a perfect. Will prolly study over break.

Also have to practice for state orchestra auditions.

Plus maintaining community service for National Honor Society.

Going to be busy.

Good luck all.

please don't take him seriously, he is clinically retarded, 70% is not an A grade as some sort of magical universal fucking rule in Britain, it depends on class to class, there are classes at US universities where a 70% is an A, there are classes at US universities where the professor fucking sucks and the average is a 20% and a 45% is an A, there are classes at US universities where there is no curve and a 96% is an A and a 95% only gets you an A-, I have personally seen all of those happen. And it's pretty obvious the same exact thing is true in British universities, the system over there is not anywhere near retarded enough to have some universal grade cutoff that applies to every class no matter how hard.

People trying to compare the difficulty of their classes to others by what the grade % cutoff is in easy freshman classes or by whether the university uses 3 credits or 5 credits as the base value for a class are fucking retarded.

Interesting. At my university the % for an A is 85 - 89.99% and A+ is 90-100% regardless of the course. It seems like every course is scaled though so I suppose your grade is indicative of your standing within a particular body of students, not so much your knowledge of a subject.

>> No.6961535

>>6961445

In all UK universities, 70% is a first, 60% a 2.1, 50% a 2.2, 45% a 3rd and 40% a pass. I believe that the actual grades returned to students are standardised though.

Classes ARE often curved - for example, in the Psych department, there's a rule that class averages have to be in the high 60s.
Besides, what's the difference? If many people are getting 90s, then there is either some major grade inflation or the courses are not challenging enough.

>> No.6961599

>>6961582
Comparison to other schools, departments, universities, years, etc. cannot be made when you're getting such ridiculously inflated grades. In most real degrees, the class average is expected to be 50, not 60, and high 60s even less. There may or may not be curving, but curving shouldn't happen anyway. It's a poor proxy for competent teachers, used to attempt to reconcile different teaching styles and materials across different years. If people can choose what the class average is supposed to be, there's no way to compare anyone to anyone else. Grades become pointless. More importantly, you can't tell if someone is skilled or shit because eitherway they have the same kind of grade.

>> No.6961601

>>6961582
Forgot to mention, it's more lower level classes that get curved systematically. In upper level classes profs tend to sort of just do what they want to get the grades distribution that they want - sometimes they refuse to scale at all, and will just make tests hard/easy so people get grades in a certain range. Maybe they'll scale with a piecewise function, maybe they'll add 5% to a particular test. In addition, I think that in some courses with lots of papers and whatnot, the standards will somewhat depend on the performance of the students.

With percentages tending to be lower, it is much more apparent which students truly were able to excel.

> In most real degrees, the class average is expected to be 50, not 60, and high 60s even less

That is complete bullshit. Different schools have different standards and different grading systems. The average grade at Harvard is an A-, is that not a "real degree"?
At many schools, a 49% is a fail. The class average is not expected to be basically failing.

I go to the University of Canterbury, in New Zealand.
I'm not too sure who actually decides just how courses are scaled but it also works against you sometimes. I've heard of cases where easy courses like biochemistry have been scaled down as a result of the average grade being far too high.

NCCU is simply cheaper. I just wrapped up my last pre-reqs for NCCU's nursing school. There are some less than ideal things about the school; the crime surrounding the area. But it's grown on me a lot.

My plan is to go nursing, work (as a year) for a year, and then apply to Duke and UNC's PA programs.

I truly love science as a whole, and I think I would just go into the research field as a career, but their doesn't seem to be a great deal of money in it, and my family (mom and dad who are retired and kids) could use the money from being a PA.

A lot of studying, but not mindless studying. Take the time to understand why things work as opposed to letting yourself be spoonfed material.

And don't feel bummed out when you don't "get" something. Most of the time it takes a while to really comprehend something.

Pro Tip: Understanding precedes mastering.
