Why isn't this -2?

(-2) * (-2) * (-2) = -8

Why only choose one answer when there's actually 3?

There is only one answer...

don't be vague

There is only one answer that is at its simplest form yes. but 12/4 = 3. and both are correct.

that doesn't answer my question.

why doesn't wolfram alpha show that the answer is -2

Because it wants you to be aware that it's 3 solutions and not 1?

I don't know ask the retards who made it.

What's the question mark for? That calculator gives you the principal cube root.

It's probably a hint to the fact that the cube root of -1 has different values as this >>6853785 says. In terms of real numbers, -2 is the only answer (for an angle from -Pi to Pi) but there are other complex numbers (in the same range) that solve the problem.

You see where it says "Assuming the principal root"? Look up what that means.

>> No.6853855

>>6853765
Wolfram takes the principle root to be the complex root of least angle. -2 has angle pi in the complex plane, while 2*e^(ipi/3) has angle pi/3 so it is chosen as the principal root.

There are three solutions to the equation -8 = z^3 but we want functions to only take one value so we have to choose a "branch" for the cube root function. If you look closer, it says "assuming the principal root" which is a special branch.
