The Nobel prize for physics was just given to some assholes who invented the *Blue* LED.

The Nobel prize is confirmed for having run out of real discoveries to honor.

OP is confirmed as a mongoloid that can't check the catalog.

The physics Nobel has always had a practical side. I believe Nobel wanted it that way. Blue LEDs were a major practical breakthrough.

In the other thread, someone mentioned Nick Holonyak, inventor of the original red LED and the laser diode. Maybe he should have shared.

Why has no-one gotten a Nobel for String Theory - the leading theory of everything? I think it is an appalling oversight.

blue LED was a major technological hurdle (its easy to make red, but blue proved dauntingly challenging) with profound uses for photonics. blue light is higher energy, and thus has a narrow wavelength, this allows greater precision in photonic instruments.

Agree it is great. I am moving to a complete led lighting set-up FTW. Low power, high reliability, high quality light.

>i don't know wat physics is and the only physics experience i have are michio kaku's lectures where he keeps babbling about his le uber unified string theory of everything
The mathematics and the theory are indeed amazing, but just because Kaku says it's le theory of everything doesn't make it le theory of everything, and it doesn't make it true either.

OP, you know nothing of physics. The blue LED required significant theoretical advances, in addition to the practical and experimental concerns that are really the root of scientific research.

Which is why he's ineligible for a Nobel....

>falling for the PR propaganda.

I bet the PR for the red and green LEDs said the same thing, back in the day, about them being a significant advancement. All scientists/universities claim their discoveries are significant advancements, they wouldn't get grant money otherwise.

Your missing the point though: was the blue LED really the best contribution to physics that has not yet been honored by a Nobel? Surely there has got to be some more important contributions out there.

>> No.6797829

Call me ignorant, but haven't blue LED's been around since the late 90's/early 2000's?

>> No.6797860

Since 1993 according to Wikipedia. I don't know why they took so long to give them the prize if it was such an important discovery.

All of them have, at least that's the intent - to honor the most beneficial contributions of science to mankind.
