He's a man performing an extensive, ongoing experiment.

His hypothesis is that being charismatic, well-dressed, able to pander to the scientifically illiterate, and Asian, is functionally superior to being a real scientist.

Data collected so far suggests he's right, as he makes makes way more money giving speeches where he babbles new-age buzzwords and makes wild speculations than groups of real scientists can get to study cancer treatment drugs.

I sincerely hope he lives long enough to see the scientific literacy rate improve to the level where he is dismissed as a phony and a charlatan.

In the meantime, I hope he enjoys the yachts he'll buy with the money kept out of the pockets of real researchers, and I hope he names them Jetsam and Flotsam, which is all that comes out of his mouth.

He's getting money off general public and media companies, he isn't stealing it from actual research

I guess I feel like there is a perception, and one which he encourages, that giving money to him is socially equivalent to giving money to science, because he is (or presents himself as) a scientist. But money given to researchers produces scientific knowledge, even when it only expands out knowledge of what doesn't work. Money given to Kaku goes to keeping Kaku immaculately groomed.

Meh. You don't (unless you're in the field and read a lot of journals) usually hear much about researcher's work. Supposedly Kaku has published quite a bit on string theory and written some textbooks.

I think as a science promoter he does a decent job that Joe Average (me, for instance) can understand. I think as a self promoter, he does an even better job, and I'm getting tired of seeing him all over the place, commenting on shit that's not really in his area of expertise. It seems like he's the media's 'go to' science guy.

I don't see anything wrong with him, tbh.
Alright, maybe he's a little megalomaniac, but he made a name for himself writing about science for the general public like many others have (Krauss, Greene, Dawkins, and so on), after doing actual work in physics.
So i don't get all this hipsterism about him.
Maybe it's because of his late interest in consciousness/singularity stuff (which so many "scientists" fail to grasp, really, therefore deeming it pseudoscience or even "pop science")
Also, he's not stealing from actual research.
If anything, he's one of the people making science appealing to the general public, therefore increasing the amount of money that goes into it
