i have a friend who doesn't believe in thermodynamics and is very interested in theoretical situations.

instead of applying theoretical physics and maths to his theoretical situations he applies philosophy and theology. he believes that theology is a part of human nature and believes that we can never actually outgrow a concept of a higher power as a society.

he's a cool guy otherwise but whenever we talk about science he talks about multiple universes, what's "outside" of the universe, what started the big bang, the probability of a heat death and then a "second big bang" out of "ghost" energy because energy isn't finite.

share your scientifically retarded friends or your own scientific retardation, /sci/

My best friend doesn't understand/believe in thermodynamics either, he believes in perpetual motion machines and thinks if you have a hydrogen fuel cell you can take the electricity from it to make more fuel.

I've given up on explaining this shit to him.

Sir, I think you need to reevaluate your friends.

As to share stories, I go to school/am a TA in Houston and boy do I get all the nutty christians who bawk witchcraft and other junk all the time. This one guy was trying to convince his friend that all of physics is rubbish because of some passage in the bible indicating that math, being a man creation, should never be taken seriously and that all the great inventions of our day were the result of god gifting people specific knowledge over time to reward and test humanity.

The worst part is his sincerity in the topic made me question whether or not he was fooling about it or actually serious.

he's a cool guy and we have a lot of common interests. unfortunately when talking science with him he sort of spaghettis the fuck out.

Having retarded friends is only going to make you look (or become) retarded yourself.

Keep better company

Exactly, you shouldn't have friends that are aren't on your "powerlevel". Glad you are starting to get it.

I'm in Houston too. Better university though. We don't have as many retarded kids.

I would straight up fail someone who talks that kind of retarded gibberish.

I actually have a fondness for wacky religious nutjobs. They're fun to talk to as long as you get over the fact that you'll never be able to change their minds.

I remember a guy who thought all of math was just calculating larger and larger numbers (PhD guys can divide five digit numbers!) and was always (sincerely) talking about the evil of masturbation and how porn addiction almost ruined his life. He even gave a speech about how excessive masturbation almost ruined his life in front of the class. Poor guy just had a regular libido but I guess he felt guilt every time he'd wank it.

Okay, I can see where he's coming from.

As a layman, I sometimes think that after the heat death of the universe, eventually due to random fluctuations of energies you would somewhere get an energy density necessary for a new big bang, even if took a gorillion gorillion years. However I recognize that I don't understand the math behind all this and the notion could be full of shit. I assume that of all the people who are more familiar with physics than I, at least one of them was smart enough to come up with this notion, and I'm not going to contribute anything by pestering physicists about it.
