>Being a philosopher is an actual occupation.

Why is this allowed? Why hasn't academia shut them down yet? A lot of them don't even teach, they spend all their time writing papers, going to international conferences, and submitting their works to peer-reviewed journals--as if they were really engaged in the genuine pursuit of knowledge.

Because a philosophers expertise is to point out when a set of beliefs is incoherent.
Nobody debunks false premises and logical fallacies as good as a philosopher.
That's all there is to it. Formal falsification. Exploration of what you can believe and how.

Apart from cultural philosophers. Those are freaks.

This is a joke, right?

Philosophers INVENTED logical fallacies. It's literally the only thing they have to back up their baseless nonsensical beliefs. It doesn't take much edcuation - in fact it only takes basic literacy - to see how full of shit most philosophers actually are.

this is basically the idea. empiricism/naturalism has its limits, and as a mathematician it really upsets me when people on here think their trade is a cure-all or that it has any normative basis.

What the fuck are you talking about? Why do you think I'm "le trolling," or that I'm a "small person? Stop being so goddamn defensive and contribute to the conversation.

>...LIKE PHILOSOPHERS.
It has historically been the philosopher's job to question, criticize and analyze the most fundamental basis in our understanding of basic branches of the sciences, arts, existence. Philosophy is concerned with truth and truth only; the same cannot be said with any other academic subject as they rely on some basis of understanding, whereas philosophy seeks to establish what that basis is. There's a reason why earlier scientists were called "natural philosophers"

You seem to have gotten really upset over not understanding what philosophy is. Or maybe you're upset that I claimed certain people think their trade in the sciences or mathematics is a cure-all, which indubitably they do.

Good for you. Here is what science actually needs: clearly defined terminology, quantifiability, highly controlled experimental conditions, reproducibility and, finally, predictability and testability.

You just ignored all that and pretended you were being clever.

>> No.6659467

>>6659457
I was referring to the epistemological question of whether we can have basic knowledge of the external world. This is what branch of epistemology--known as "empiricism"--is used as a foundation for the sciences. The limits of empiricism is what the whole philosophy of science conversation is about, not the scientific method.

This comment is akin to saying that mathematics is useless because mathematicians sinply invented their axioms. Yeah, that's how stupid your post is.

If humans didn't invent things, they wouldn't exist. There is no special constellation or rock formation or fossilized piece of shit that can give humans the tools they need. So instead, we created simple and effective tools for understanding the world. The universe is entirely logical. An event cannot occur and not occur simultaneously; quanities are an emmergent quality of reality. So we have constructed axioms and fallacies in order to better align human thought with the logical behavior of the universe.

Any of you edgy fags that think philosophy is bullshit because you can just say whatever the hell you want, or mathematics is null because it has no physical basis, obviously don't have the merit to hang around a community like /sci/ (not that it isn't shit, but you catch my drift).
