Found in North Carolina hills when i was going down the mountain half concious from heat stroke.

I recognize the quartz but not the soft, flacky, silery metallic stuff. What could it be?

Does fools gold have to be yellow? This only has the dark silvery look to it.

Looks like Muscovite but I can't really tell the color in the pic. The easiest way to test this is to check if the mineral breaks off into sheets. If it doesn't it might be magnetite, you can check this by seeing if it is magnetic.

Biotite is black. Could be another mica like muscovite.

do you happen to have a picture of the site where you collected the rock? was the area strangely devoid of vegetation? Rather than saying "heat stroke" could you describe the symptoms that you were suffering in proximity?

As young quartz grows it consumes a wide variety of elements in it's diet depending on it's surroundings. Many strange things have been found in their bellies upon autopsy.

Yes, it flakes in sheets. A few sections of the stuff that points away from the quartz are almost soft when I run my thumb over it. Like tightly pressed sheets of paper or thin plastic that give the slightest bend. When I press my thumb nail into the edge of section of tightly packed sheets it deforms with light pressure.

After reading the wiki page on Muscovite after your suggestions, I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Mystery solved.

I don't have a picture but I was in the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina. The area we were passing through to get back to camp was strewn with boulders, dark brown top soil, tall and thick tree cover. I don't remember it having much grass at all in that area except for brush at the base of some trees.

Symptoms: Confusion was the most dominant, dissociative thoughts, my actions were mechanical, limbs leaden.

I was butt scooting to get down this section of trail that had large outcroppings of dark rock creating shelf's. The trail was smooth otherwise with dark soil. When my hand touched the ground I felt a rough rock barely above the soil. Without thinking I stopped what I was doing, pulled it free, shook the dirt off and saw it was quartz. Really it was just a quick glance, shove it in pocket. I didn't give the action any thought and I've never been into collecting minerals.
