Not a frequent visitor of this here /sci/, but i have a question. Who. not genetically engineer humans to feed off of radiation? If we are to become a space fairing species we have to have resistance of some sort, so why not make it food?

wow you're a genius! we'll just make humans subsist on radiation; it's so simple! why has no one ever thought of that before?

also, why don't we just engineer humans to be bulletproof, immune to all diseases, and immortal? and while we're at it, we can end poverty and world hunger! just make people stop being poor!

The required changes for hard radiation resistance would be so extensive the result really wouldn't be human anymore. Also AFAIK there aren't any radiophile species that actually use the radiation as an energy source, the reason why it's biologically harmful is that the particle energy is sufficiently high that it will disrupt any structure that interacts with it. They're just good at defending their genome as much as possible and repairing the damage quickly when it does occur. I guess their genomes would also have more redundant coding.

And that's only as long as there's a niche to exploit, as maintaining such redundancies is energetically costly. Once that niche is used up the species will either die out or move.
