If math is just following directions and memorizing steps, how come so many people have trouble with it?

You are either stupid, underage, or stupid. To truly understand and succeed in mathematics, you have to know the logical reasoning for what you are doing. Memorizing and following steps won't help you really understand how mathematics works.

it's really only this way in highschool when you have teachers who don't give a fuck about teaching the logic and only want to boast their own grades by teaching "shortcuts" which students can follow rather than have to think through the problem

OP here, ok so theres actually logic going on when i solve an equation using the quadratic formula? that's what I'm working on now. Apparently my math class isn't teaching me the logic then because all it's showing us are examples and what steps are needed to be done to get the answer. I'n asking a question to you guys who obviously know more than me. There's really no need to be ass about it guys.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I had trouble with math because it doesn't interest me and so I didn't apply myself to it.

Solve a general quadratic equation (ax^2+bx+c) by completing the square, and you will derive the quadratic formula.

i was the same way growing up but now I have an interest for it. I have no idea why but I've been doing algebra all weekend. Haven't even fapped.

In school and in many courses later on for non-mathematicians mostly because of >>6557309,

For a maths student:
1. If you have to proof something by yourself, there is often no pattern for how to do it. Unless you don't get the right idea, which you can't do much about, you won't succeed.

2. In advanced courses, the prof will always try to follow single logical steps, but after a certain time with a concept it is viewed as something you don't have to explain when you use it.
So sometimes you don't know which logical steps he did, and thus can not follow them.

I like science but I have a hard time at math. I had to endure math classes in which I didn't care about. Every time I see a an Algebra and Geometry problem, my brains associates the experience with a negative feel. I failed easy math problems as a 12 year old in front class caused my teacher to look at my with utter disdain. Geometry in high-school was boring, I put my head and went to sleep during class hoping my teacher wouldn't catch me. Why should I have to take class about I subject I didn't care about? I had to take the class again but I put more effort into this time. I ended up with a D though I think my teacher passed me because he felt bad more me.

how is that logic? Looks like the same steps my class is having me go through

Algebra requires a bit of creativity mate. You're given a known toolbox of operators and tricks and just you have to figure it out.

I don't know any other way of figuring it out though. I just solved this by following the steps I'm learning. What other way is there? I guess I'm having trouble understand that someone could just "wing" a problem like this and solve it using creativity.

You can also use "Completing the square" to solve a quadratic equation.

>> No.6557820

>>6557782
The quadratic formula IS completing the square. If you complete the square of the general form of a quadratic then it spits out the formula.

What grade are you in? A lot of times in high school and lower levels of math you just have to take it for granted what the book says, but as you move into higher levels of math with proofs, you will actually start to understand why those things you used earlier makes sense.

there's logic applied and you'd probably recognize it if you looked at graphs that coincide with functions and their derivatives/integrals and so on.

Understanding the logic behind derivatives and would probably be an easy first step for someone trying to understand mathematical reasoning.

To do well in math you have to be able to develop a intuition and be able to logically solve something without following steps. Math is not a plug and chug operation but a puzzle. Just my opinion.

Do you understand all the steps though? And why they are valid? Can you interpret the algebraic manipulations graphically or make a sketch of the quadratic from nothing but the formula? Can you think of real world examples where this theory may be applied? How do you interpret the solutions in those contexts? Etc.

No, it has the top line going further than the upper case one, and you can clearly see what is meant based on the context.

Degenerate memories that degenerate because they have degenerate personalities inside.

I am very persistent at math. And now I am good at it, while many drop the pen and hate to think about it because of emotions. People are lazy and I am not so I am awesome at math. 6 Hours a day of writing at least is required to get on my level.

They should keep in mind basic things like computers are not retarded, low reaction time should be achieved, being one dimensional is a good thing , persistence is source, so it is more important than intelligence, strength, skill, money... Breath meditation is end game material to keep stress levels down. You want to have oxygen efficiency so drink coffee, run and meditate on breath.

Math starts getting annoying hard at university level where using logic are essential. Sure people could solve problems following steps and it should be easy for others 2 do that. But pupils still fail. My guess is that the teacher need to explain with more variations and that some people need more time understanding the logic behind the steps for an method.

>> No.6558214

In high school it was just following directions and memorizing steps. Now when I'm studying cs at uni everything has just changed.
