What are the dangers of staying awake for over 48 hours straight?

Any long term effects on the brain?

Not much, just don't go much longer than four to five days or you'll wreck yourself.

No you would have to stay awake for 4 days plus

Nobody really knows OP. Its hard to measure permanent brain damage when the effect is slight. Some studies suggest its cumulative and any amount of sleep depravation causes permanent damage, some say 4 days apparently. The truth is it most likely varies from person to person depending on your brain structure, but nobody really knows.

You will reach a point from where you cant stay awake anymore without outside help. If you go on then (drugs or whatever) then yes, sure these things might hurt you.
