I put some methanol in an altoids tin to sterilize these needles before vivisecting squirrels. What is this rusty stuff?

The tin isn't made of iron or steel, is it? Methanol doesn't oxidize that, would it? Is it safe? Sorry for forgetting my chemistry lessons.

Or, would the rust have come from the needles... maybe. Probably. Is that it, /sci/?

The 'methanol' is a solution of water and methanol, BTW.

Common, /sci/, I want to know if these will carry tetanus or are toxic or something

Bump

>The tin isn't made of iron or steel, is it? Methanol doesn't oxidize that
how about considering the needles themselves

Why the fuck would you care? Vivisection is not usually survived anyway...tetanus is the least of your squirrels' problems.

>> No.6504496

If you're vivisecting squirrels why would you even sterilize your equipment?

I was kidding about the squirrels.

>> No.6504555

The tin is almost certainly made of steel, possibly with a thin tin coating, but not necessarily.

Then who are you vivisecting?

OP didn't follow the golden rule of making the post content or image more interesting than the topic at hand.

>> No.6504596

Yeah I am pretty sure that it is the needles. I will have to throw these away. Thanks all

>>6504555
So it is rust from the tin you say? I wondered if the tin was galvanized or something, and that leached off.

If I said that, I would break >>6504575 again.

You don't have a magnet?

Hmm yes, needles respond. Case solved

Shit but the altoid tin does too

Tetanus is a bacteria. You worry about "rusty nails" not because they're rusty, but because they are
1) exposed to dirt outside, where tetanus is plentiful
2) capable of deep wounds.

(2) Matters because tetanus is anaerobic. Superficial wounds are not a big deal, just clear with some peroxide and be done with it. But deep puncture wounds are trouble.

Tetanus is not caused by rust. Rust is correlated with tetanus—outdoors.
