My friend's girlfriend is a Doctor. She doesn't have a cell phone because she thinks they cause brain cancer.

Is she /sci/ valid?

Please tell me she's not a MEDICAL doctor.

>> No.6482292

Yes.

>> No.6482291

No, she's a doctor. Their understanding of biochemistry can be really shaky.

>> No.6482295

I hope she doesn't work in radiology. Or oncology for that matter.

If she is a doctor in history I'd accept the idiocy.
If she is a medical doctor she should either live in the woods by her logic. Or the Wi-Fi everywhere would give her mega brain cancer. Or she should euthanised.

>> No.6482299

>>6482278
If she thinks that she should probably rip the antenna and radio box out of her car, throw away any florescent light bulbs, move away from transmission lines, and hulk smash any new street lights as those can emit more EM radiation than a cell phone.

wifi signals aren't even close to being comparable to the "strenght" of the signals from a cellphone held right to your ear.

These, there could be a link but the technology is to new to get good data on long term exposure, also where are you going to find a no-mobile control these days.

inverse square law is a bitch.

Also putting a wifi network in your house can cut down on cell signals enormously. Modern phones have an algorithm where they use less signal power the closer they are to the tower. So ironically the closer you are to the tower or receiving point the less exposure you will get. You can hook up a home cell network through the internet if you are worried about it.

All doctors have pagers that work on the same fucking band. Also, if she's so fucking terrified of electro-magnetic waves, why the fuck does she work in a hospital that probably houses 100s of X-ray machines which actually do contribute to cancer in extreme circumstances

What a dumb bitch

>any new street lights as those can emit more EM radiation than a cell phone.

Except those are all in the visible (and nearby) spectrum and don't penetrate the flesh.

Phones use the microwave/radio spectrum which certainly does. There's no question that it heats the brain.

If you worked for a radio station or something you wouldn't go stand infront of the transmitter. Yet every waking day you strap a radio/microwave transmitter to your leg and hold it against your skull while making a phone call (ie. intensely transmitting).

It's nowhere near as powerful of course, and is probably fine. But who knows? This is new technology. We've only been using these things consistently for 10-20 years.

In 80 years after 100 years continuously irradiating ourselves they might look back on us like we look back on smokers. What on earth where they thinking?

Yes, but she's making a bigger deal about it than it actually is.

It's like saying you don't eat raw meat because it can cause foodborne illness. They're right, sure, but the risk is slim. Unless you're eating raw ground beef, in which case enjoy your mad cow.

>Unless you're eating raw ground beef, in which case enjoy your mad cow.
No wait, scratch that. I forgot that cooking mad cow meat doesn't make it safe for consumption (prions and shit).

Maybe a better analogy would be that someone refuses to eat ground beef because it has a higher risk of containing mad cow nerve tissue.

there was a legislation trying to reduce cell phone radiation by limiting the amount of towers in a given area

0.4 W/kg to 27.5 W/kg

Yes these sorts of energy densities could have a deleterious effect.

Too bad your cell phone only eradicates you 0.037 watts per kg.

So yes if you literally had a cellphone tower under your bed your fine.

Just some perspective. Your body generates about 1.4 watts per kg in heat. Adding even one watt per kg to deep tissue has a profound effect. Microwaves are just deep tissue heat sources. Yes too much is bad and things like eyes and testicles are particularly susceptible to heating at certain wavelengths but your cell phone emitting 0.4 watts is not going to have a meaningful impact.

Real Doctor or PhD?

>> No.6484389

Doctors know how to cut up people and memorize stuff, thinking is not in their job description

from the 300 Medicine students i teach in physics every year, there are maybe 2-5 who either know their shit or ask questions and try to learn. The rest has trouble solving a=b/c for c, figuring out how many milliliters are in a liter or give concentration in units of "mo", because you can obviously cancel out the "l" in mol/l.

lets just say, I write down the names of those who do this shit in tests so in the future i can check whether one of those eneded up being my doctor

good for you, you still have some faith in the future generation.
Do to our fucked up school system, people can stop taking math courses after the 10th grade in some places.
Pic is how i believe they solve most problems, see what variables are given in the problem, find the formula which uses most of them, plug in the values and dont perform any kind of sanity check. What is the final speed of a sled going down the hill - if they get an answer which is 10 times the speed of light they see no problem with it.
Drawing graphs deserves its own category. This are the favourite ways to draw a linear regression through some datapoints
1) connect first and last dot
2) connect each dot with the next one using a straight line
3) connect them with a wavy spline
my favourite here is a graph with 10 datapoints which they were given an A4 sheet of millimeter paper for, drawn in a square of 2x2 inches
