I'm divided. Considering i have a 126 IQ, should i study philosophy or mathematics?

My brain wants to go with mathematics but my heart wants philosophy, and i wanna go academic4lyfe, so which one you think is better for me?

>> No.6437147

your IQ means jack shit. study what you like. math has lots of potential to inspire philosophical thought, and lots of philosophy work can be done mathematically. why are you going to school, for a job or out of interest?

college

I'd go with philosophy.

Math academics spend a lot of their time teaching first year courses. (Most math students are in other programs taking a math requirement.)

Philosophy academics spend their time drunk and in department political battles.

In terms of job prospects, there is much more opportunity in math. The demand for math professors is higher, and math professors often leave to make more money, leaving room for you. No one takes philosophy seriously, and no one wants to hire a philosophy professor for anything.

Why not both?
This has been bothering me for a while, but does the USA not have double degrees? At least for B.A.? In my country it's fairly common

>> No.6437168

Here's a rule of thumb for you

If the only job you can get with your education is teaching the same thing to even more people, it's a bad education with no job prospects.

This includes all of the social studies courses, philosophy, language etc.

Getting a degree for "fun" is one of the worst decisions you can ever make.

If yes, study philosophy

There are things you can do with a philosophy degree, law school for example. Regardless of what your degree is in doing internships will probably help with getting jobs.

Do pure maths.

Are you saying you can use the philosophy degree to be a student at a law school, or a teacher at a law school?
Neither of those challenges what I said about only being able to be a teacher.

How is being a student at a law school the same as being a teacher?

It's not, I was just unsure what he/you actually meant.

The point being that in either case, it doesn't change the fact that the only thing you can do with a philosophy major is being a philosophy teacher.

>that philosophy depiction
I was in a philosophy class once, and someone once started talking about the philosophical postulation that you can't know anything. The professor explained to him the basics of why it's accepted to be false and said that we'd be covering it later on in the semester.

The student looked him in the face and said that he found the proofs presented to him to be unsatisfactory in disproving that you can't know anything.

The professor stopped, turned to him, and asked him why he was even in the class, if he believed it was impossible to know anything; he wouldn't be getting anything out of it anyway, if his beliefs were true.

Study math so that you can get an actual job when you are done university.

Most of the things you learn in university you can learn for free on your own. You are paying for the university to say "yah we checked, this guy actually knows his shit".

Having a piece of paper saying you know stuff about philosophy is useless, mathematics will actually give you prospects. If you are truly interested in philosophy you can study it in your free time.

Also anybody not in philosophy will think you are a self absorbed idiot if you have a degree in it.

But that isn't true, you can use your degree to go to law school.

Study Math. Do you really need a professor to read philosophy books to you?

this. you can study philosophy at your own spare time, that area is nowhere near qualified to be a university degree in my opinion

Much easier and a good blend of philosophy and history. Also, if have a unbiased teacher, there are no wrong or right answers.

it measures a bunch of stupid things that really have no bearing, stuf like cognitive ability. I scored 155 on the official Mensa one, but it's just stupid. what I meant when I replied was that the scores are based on an average of 100, so it wouldn't make sense for there to be an average of 120, as 100 is the default average.
