Orion and Aurora over Iceland

If you see a sky like this -- photograph it. A month ago in Iceland, an adventurous photographer (pictured) chanced across a sky full of aurora and did just that. In the foreground lies the stratovolcano Öræfajökull. In the background, among other sky delights, lies the constellation of Orion, visible to the aurora's left. Auroras are sparked by energetic particles from the Sun impacting the magnetic environment around the Earth. Resultant energetic particles such as electrons and protons rain down near the Earth's poles and impact the air. The impacted air molecules obtain excited electrons, and when electrons in oxygen molecules fall back to their ground state, they emit green light. Auroras are known to have many shapes and colors.

I do not work for or represent NASA and I am not paid by or a part of APOD at all. I am merely a humble anon who loves the Astronomy Picture of the Day and wants to share it with /sci/

I would only recommend that you drop the namefag unless you plan to answer a lot of posters.

Keep up the rest tho.

You must not come around here very often. I do these threads every night. Most do not get any replies (which is expected given the nature of APOD, it doesn't often raise discussion points), some get bumped, and occasionally I get a question that I always gladly answer.

So how come Orion is shaking his club at Saturn? What did Saturn ever do to him?!

I wish I could say that image is stunning, but I've just seen pictures of Auroras far too often (mostly thanks to NASA's APOD website.)
What I want to see is something new.
Something that makes me ask questions and search for answers.

I still love you too APOD.
