I have a cognitive science question.

Imagine the following scenario:

Person A quickly processes information. When presented with new contents, she understands them instantly and is able to draw non-trivial logical conclusions. She has a good command of her native language as well as foreign languages. She also possesses good geometric intuition. She can mentally visualize complicated objects and recognize patterns most others don't see.

Person B never managed to understand the concept of a variable. Despite having repeated 5th grade three times, he never grasped what it means to write an 'x' instead of number, let alone how to manipulate an equation with an 'x'. But even operations on numbers without variables take him a lot of time and he often fails to do them correctly. He has trouble repeating instructions his teacher gave him. He has very poor imagination, for example he couldn't tell the number of sides a triangle has without drawing it. Even though he received the best posssible education, his vocabulary in his native language is very small and he struggles hard to write down a complete sentence.

Of course we can all agree that the differences between person A and person B have nothing to do with intelligence and will have no effect whatsoever on their academic career, especially not in fields like physics or math, where literally everyone can do literally everything with only hard work.

However I'd like to ask, from a cognitive science point of view, how could we possible characterize, test and quantify the difference between person A and person B?

While IQ tests aren't a good measure of intelligence they are heavily based on pattern recognition and visualizing objects. In this case it would show a large difference between the two but it wouldn't show person B's strengths if any.

Also, IQ is a good measure up to a point. It doesn't tell you that much about how successful a person will be, but it tells you a little bit about their brain. Really though, we can't measure it yet, but it's not that important. See how successful you can be in a field and if you come up against a brick wall you have probably reached your genetic intelligence limit.
