Ice floats even though it is colder than liquid water.
Things are supposed to get bigger (more spread out) when they get warmer (this is what it means to have an increase in entropy), so the joke is that the ice cubes are denying that "law."

While it's certainly true that water becomes less dense when it undergoes a phase change to ice, it's not an unexplained phenomenon--ice has a sparse crystalline structure--as the water loses heat, the most energetically favorable state is one that happens to be more spread out than the "jumbled" structure of liquid water--but it doesn't have more entropy just because it is bigger. It's still more organized in a regular crystalline structure.

How do you work better?

I'm getting buried in work. I thought the answer was to get into the habit of spending more time working. Seems logical. Instead I end up spending an afternoon doing what I could have achieved in 2 hours, but I feel like I should stay because "This is work time, not leisure time, I need to set this habit".

Turns out its better to work smart and hard, than to work for long periods of time but not achieve much.

So how do you enter that zen concentration mode more often?

There's something wrong about this image.

I remember learning that the amount of numbers between 0 and 1 is exactly the same as the amount of numbers between 0 and 10. You can find a unique value between 0 and 1 to correspond to every value between 0 and 10 by simply dividing any number between 0 and 10 by 10.

Then again, things get weird between integers and real numbers because integers are countable and real numbers are not.

Come to think about it, the philosophy teacher has a point though.

Since we use maths as a tool to forward our understanding, we are limited by what we can only perceive and reliably measure, so essentially our yard sticks of measurement can only be referenced by what we agree on as reliable values of measurement.

So in a sense, we invent the means of interpretation on how we understand the laws of Nature, until of course, with the scientific method we discover a efficient and accurate method.

I am really tired, so I hope that made some sense.

A farmer wants to build a new pen for his livestock and turns to his friends - a physicist, an engineer, and a mathematician - to help him design the best pen using a limited number of fence segments.

The physicist thinks for a moment, scratches a few calculations on a pad of paper and exclaims, "Eureka! Of course! A circular pen will give you the most area with the given perimeter!"

"Now hold on a second!" the engineer says. He does a quick survey of the farmer's property and sketches out a few drawings of the layout. "A rectangular fence would allow us to make better use of the existing buildings and fences!"

The physicist and the engineer argue for a moment but finally settle on a design and get to work.

The mathematician, meanwhile, walks out into the middle of the field dragging four segments of fencing behind him and props them up in a tiny square around himself. He smiles, smugly, to himself and declares, "Behold! I define myself to be outside the fence!"

no its not. You cant count every real number between zero and one. Where would you start? 0, 0.00000..... it doesn't make sense. You wont get anywhere. But if you try to count the integers (0, 1, 2, 3,...), you will eventually get to any number. This distinction is important and has a name. The number of integers is countably infinite and the number of reals is uncountably infinite.
