Imagine a ball of steel the size of the sun. Imagine that every trillion years, a fly lands on it. When the ball of steel has eroded away from the friction of all the flies landing, infinity will not even have begun.

Why do mathematicians even bother with infinity? It can't possibly have any practical applications.

who says math needs applications?

Practically, considering everyday life
infinity=really big number

But no, someone who isn't sane (he is a mathematician after all) can't function without thinking in terms of infinity, uncountable sets or R^infty spaces.

Let them live in their own crazy world, while some normal guys see aplications of math in a real finite world

I don't think a fly landing would disturb even one atom. It would never erode from only that.

It wouldn't because of the intense gravity. It would colapse into a black hole in an instant.

You know those dx's you write at the end of your tripple integrals? Those where ment to be infinitesimals, which we now know isn't a fruitfull way to go, after understanding or handeling infinity better.

And of course, dense motherfuckers who only study the applications, think why fuckin bother right? Not knowing that the intellectual cirkel jurking of the past made possible the bridges they build to day, or whatever engineers do

which is longer

a line with a definite starting point, then goess on forever in one direction

a line that goes on forever in both directions.

both are infinite, but is one more infinite?

Joyce wrote it better

>Try to imagine the awful meaning of this. You have often seen the sand on the seashore. How fine are its tiny grains! And how many of those tiny little grains go to make up the small handful which a child grasps in its play. Now imagine a mountain of that sand, a million miles high, reaching from the earth to the farthest heavens, and a million miles broad, extending to remotest space, and a million miles in thickness; and imagine such an enormous mass of countless particles of sand multiplied as often as there are leaves in the forest, drops of water in the mighty ocean, feathers on birds, scales on fish, hairs on animals, atoms in the vast expanse of the air: and imagine that at the end of every million years a little bird came to that mountain and carried away in its beak a tiny grain of that sand. How many millions upon millions of centuries would pass before that bird had carried away even a square foot of that mountain, how many eons upon eons of ages before it had carried away all? Yet at the end of that immense stretch of time not even one instant of eternity could be said to have ended. At the end of all those billions and trillions of years eternity would have scarcely begun. And if that mountain rose again after it had been all carried away, and if the bird came again and carried it all away again grain by grain, and if it so rose and sank as many times as there are stars in the sky, atoms in the air, drops of water in the sea, leaves on the trees, feathers upon birds, scales upon fish, hairs upon animals, at the end of all those innumerable risings and sinkings of that immeasurably vast mountain not one single instant of eternity could be said to have ended; even then, at the end of such a period, after that eon of time the mere thought of which makes our very brain reel dizzily, eternity would scarcely have begun.

>My sweet little whorish Nora I did as you told me, you dirty little girl, and pulled myself off twice when I read your letter. I am delighted to see that you do like being fucked arseways. Yes, now I can remember that night when I fucked you for so long backwards. It was the dirtiest fucking I ever gave you, darling. My prick was stuck in you for hours, fucking in and out under your upturned rump. I felt your fat sweaty buttocks under my belly and saw your flushed face and mad eyes. At every fuck I gave you your shameless tongue came bursting out through your lips and if a gave you a bigger stronger fuck than usual, fat dirty farts came spluttering out of your backside. You had an arse full of farts that night, darling, and I fucked them out of you, big fat fellows, long windy ones, quick little merry cracks and a lot of tiny little naughty farties ending in a long gush from your hole. It is wonderful to fuck a farting woman when every fuck drives one out of her. I think I would know Nora’s fart anywhere. I think I could pick hers out in a roomful of farting women. It is a rather girlish noise not like the wet windy fart which I imagine fat wives have. It is sudden and dry and dirty like what a bold girl would let off in fun in a school dormitory at night. I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also. Goodnight, my little farting Nora, my dirty little fuckbird! There is one lovely word, darling, you have underlined to make me pull myself off better. Write me more about that and yourself, sweetly, dirtier, dirtier.

- James Joyce
